Putting together thoughts on @UnbelievableJB with Douglas Murray and Tom Wright, reflecting on how my own Anglican heritage plays into this. Douglas laments that the CofE has lost its saltiness. I got the full flavor of Anglicanism only because my folks landed in a dying corner.
When they found their way past fundamentalism, liturgy beckoned, so they walked into a continuing Anglican church and put down roots, but already the clock was ticking. Today that church is on its last legs.
In some sense I see myself as Douglas's kid sister American avatar waving him down from across the pond and saying he should come back, but then I pause and ask myself "Come back to what?"
Douglas's own home church St. Margaret's closed "due to the pandemic." Limp-wristed pandemic response a running theme both for him and @holland_tom, and for Douglas it was made concrete in literally cutting him off from his home church.
I may Brit-LARP but at heart I am a true American Protestant in that when my tiny ACNA church finally dies, it will be okay. I will grieve but I will move on. I will be a nomad for a season if necessary and it won't affect my faith one whit.
Can a disillusioned, dispirited CofE-er who craves leadership from the bishops think this way, though? Can he come to faith as a nomad? Unsure. (Maybe a place for my chums @IrreverendPod to chime in.)
Correction: Sorry, continuing Anglican acronym is ACC. That's where I live. My fingers typed ACNA.
