House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy opposes setting up a commission to examine the Jan. 6 Capitol attack.

Of course he does. Trump's lies about election fraud fueled a violent mob -- and GOPers like McCarthy echoed those lies for months. huffpost.com/entry/kevin-mc… via @ArthurDelaneyHP
McCarthy's stated reason for opposing the Jan. 6 commission is that Pelosi "refused to negotiate in good faith on basic parameters" for it.

Except Pelosi agreed to virtually all of the GOP's demands:

*Equal representation
*Shared subpoena power
*Report due by year's end
Don't forget McCarthy amplified Trump's lies more than just about anyone.

After Biden won, on Fox News: "Trump won this election. Everyone who’s listening: Do not be quiet. Do not be silent about this. We cannot allow this to happen before our very eyes.” huffpost.com/entry/trump-fr…
This tweet by Kevin McCarthy is still up, comparing Biden's electoral win to a "battle." Image
And of course, Kevin McCarthy was one of 147 House and Senate Republicans who voted to overturn the election based on lies about election fraud -- just hours after a Capitol insurrection fueled by those same lies. huffpost.com/entry/republic…
The big cherry on top of the gaslit sundae may have been when Kevin McCarthy tweeted a big congrats to Biden and Harris on winning on Inauguration Day -- just weeks after voting to overturn the election + lying on TV that Trump had won. huffpost.com/entry/republic…
So it should be no surprise that Kevin McCarthy is going to do everything he can to dispute, derail and discredit a commission focused on what happened on Jan. 6.

Surely Dems know this.
Meanwhile, Biden admin just issued a statement in support of a Jan. 6 commission.

"The attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021, was an unprecedented assault on our democracy, an effort to undo the will of the American people and threaten the peaceful transition of power." Image

Dem Rep. Thompson, who put together the Jan. 6 commission bill with GOP Rep. Katko, says GOP leadership was engaged in the bill's development from the start + on board with it.

But Kevin McCarthy "has, at the last moment, raised issues that basically we have gone past," he says.
"There was no issue on his part," Thompson says of GOP Leader McCarthy being supportive behind-the-scenes of the Jan. 6 commission bill until now.

"But I guess that's politics."
"Republican members have told me privately they believe we should do this commission," says Rep. Zoe Lofgren, chair of the House Admin Committee.

So the top two Republican leaders in the House and Senate now officially oppose an independent panel investigating what led to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack and how to prevent it from ever happening again. huffpost.com/entry/mitch-mc…
I asked Sen. Roy Blunt, chair of the Senate Republican Policy Committee, about the idea that his party is trying to whitewash the events of Jan. 6 and the real reason GOPers are opposed to the commission is because they spread the same lies that fueled the insurrection....
He basically said don't put me in that group.

"Since I'm working on a report that [Dem] Sen. Klobuchar and [Dem] Sen. Peters will sign off on, I think it'd be pretty hard to say that's what I'm doing."

(He and Klobuchar have been holding committee hearings on this.)

Mitch McConnell on where Senate Republicans are on forming a Jan. 6 commission: "Willing to listen" to arguments about why such a commission is needed.
Says a Jan. 6 commission needs to be "balanced" (it is, based on what Pelosi has agreed to) and for now, Senate Republicans are "undecided" on whether to proceed.
Why would GOPers be "undecided" on looking into the Jan. 6 Capitol attack?

Maybe because many of them told the same lies about election fraud that fueled the pro-Trump attack that day. And 8 of them still voted to overturn the election despite the attack. huffpost.com/entry/republic…

It's now been 3 weeks of CNN saying or doing nothing about its senior political commentator Rick Santorum saying there was “nothing” in America before white colonizers came -- and that Native Americans haven’t done much for American culture anyway. huffpost.com/entry/rick-san…
It's also been a week since we asked all 37 companies who ran ads during Santorum's appearance on Chris Cuomo's show if they have a problem with Santorum’s remarks or sharing airtime with him.

Silence. huffpost.com/entry/cnn-adve…
Everyone just trying to quietly move on without addressing this.

I guess nobody has a problem giving a massive platform to a guy who says stuff like this?

Good morning! ☕️

A thing you may have missed is that Texas Republicans just voted to effectively ban public school teachers from talking about racism, white supremacy or current events. huffpost.com/entry/texas-re…
This bill, which just passed the Texas House and is close to being on the governor's desk, states that social studies and civics teachers can't discuss the *concept* that “one race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex."
The bill also prevents teachers from discussing the idea that “an individual, by virtue of the individual’s race or sex, bears responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex."
