The question remains...

Why are parents obeying the commands of a lunatic proto fascist operative (La Grange) who is hell bent on infecting kids and their parents with covid?

The first rule in Timothy Snyder’s On Tyranny: Don’t obey in advance.
The next rule is Defend Institutions.

Parents need to defend Public Education.

Teachers, Administrators and custodians are human beings. Sending your kids to school is putting the lives of those people at risk & beneath your need to work and make a living.
If you want great teachers, maybe putting their lives at risk isn’t the best strategy.
While people wonder and try to comprehend the desire to open schools during a third wave, the answer is taxpayer funded child care while you perform work for pay. Stop performing and employers will demand UCP provide better supports for classrooms.
Or the next 4.5 weeks will be online learning to protect the population. It’s not hospitals that need protection, it’s the people who require them when they are infected with covid. No covid transmission, no overwhelmed hospitals. That’s how reducing transmission works.
There is abundant evidence that students in classrooms are a primary transmitter of covid.

Here is a study in the Lancet.

thelancet.com/journals/lanin…
Another Guardian article demonstrating how little is known about transmission, even after a year of the pandemic.

theguardian.com/world/2021/jan…
Another article about transmission of covid within schools.

theconversation.com/children-may-t…
There are plenty of studies that show it’s less likely that children transmit covid. But there are no studies that state children NEVER transmit the virus to peers and family members.

Because they do.

It’s a matter of risk.
Children’s risk is reduced in most studies. It’s the same in other studies. So what are the facts?

We don’t know for sure.

That’s how science works.

Do we know what causes brain aneurisms? Blood clots.
But that’s only evident after years of study by dissecting the brains of people who died from a brain aneurism.

We do not know the long term effects of covid because the disease has only existed for a little more than a year.
Science is cumulative. New discovery replaces old knowledge.

While many studies demonstrate that children don’t seem to be spreading the virus. It’s not a firm statement saying it doesn’t happen.
In more testing focussed studies, children are contracting covid, but don’t exhibit symptoms. The absence of symptoms has many confident that children aren’t contracting or spreading covid.

But the studies are not testing for asymptomatic covid and transmission.
Science only tells you what is asked.

Inferences are called hypothesis. Unproven hypothesis.

The studies that have tested asymptomatic disease in children find up to 70% show no symptoms.

The implications for adults who share space with children is enormous.
There could be 15/25 students that are asymptomatic covid carriers in one classroom and no one would know. Because we aren’t testing for asymptomatic covid.

It’s only fact and proven children don’t spread the disease if you actually test that hypothesis. Most studies don’t.
So the CMOH and Education Minister are telling half truths when they say children aren’t transmission drivers. How would they know.? Testing and tracing have been unable to keep up in schools. We have no idea if those statements are correct. And we have no way to determine truth.
I kept my child home from in school classes. Because we do not know the long term effects of children who do contract the disease. He has his whole life ahead of him.

Why would I gamble with his health for my convenience?

I wouldn’t. That’s why he’s full time online.
But I also read the book On Tyranny shortly after it was published and I’ve know for years that Kenney and Harper are autocratic tyrants. So, I literally trust nothing that emerges from Kenney or his ministers. Not one thing without verification from experts who I trust.
We cannot allow our children to be guinea pigs. To be experimented upon to determine transmission rates the hard way. This isn’t the HUNGER Games. Survival of the fittest isn’t a humane public healthcare strategy.

Demand the provincial government stop gaslighting the public.

The problem with Ms Krause’s statement is that we learned a backlog of bitumen that Canadian developers create produces humongous profits for American refinery owners.
When Rachel Notley put a temporary limit on oil sands production, the price of oil jumped immediately.

By maintaining current production levels, and a bottlenecked transport system, US producers can manipulate the price they pay for Canadian product, & thus, the royalty rates.
After its refined, oil sands is sold at the same price as Brent Oil standard price back to Canadians and across the globe.

Resulting in astronomical profits for American upstream owners and shareholders.

At the expense of Albertans and the expense of Canadian fuel consumers.

Thanks for writing this thread @MgS_2011

People who continue to be unconcerned about the danger UCP poses have privilege to ignore the existential threat being made.
Those who are still fighting for social equality, use of their political agency, acceptance and political change to accommodate their needs don’t have the luxury of privilege.
The rights of the most marginalized are under threat while still being established. Existential threat.

Ignore that threat and you are giving conservatives tacit approval.

Excellent thread Norlaine! Deserves to be amplified and read far and wide!
The only thing I’d add is an explanation for how information is transferred from one person to another and how truth and veracity can be implied through manipulation to provide credibility.

It’s the use & manipulation of framing.
Explained here in a short clip by George Lakoff:

This link will lead to the longer in-depth review Lakoff delivered as a lecture several years ago. This is part 1 of a 6 part series.

Another option is to read his book. ImageImage

This is an interesting thread that I’m going to use to illustrate current affairs in Israel.

The farther left are struggling with whom to support during this Palestinian Israeli conflict. They’re struggling with cognitive dissonance.
Characteristic of the further left is the desire to view the world through binary thinking. Good or bad, right or wrong, just or unjust.

Nuance and grey areas are forbidden. So a fissure has emerged between those who support Palestine and those who defend Israel.
It’s a curiosity to witness those who attempt to impose simplicity onto a complex and complicated situation. You can almost feel the angst this is causing within the progressive camp.

Support Jews who have been persecuted for millennia or Palestinians, indigenous to the region?

If you want to know why UCP is cutting funding for post secondary education and installing a new curriculum, watch this video.

UCP has used the same arguments as Tom Cotton.

Indoctrination of youth and revealing conservative values to be inherently racist and misogynist.
Any institution advancing knowledge of real history is a threat to conservative ideology.

Truth is viewed as indoctrination by conservatives who would white wash ugly truths and focus on white Anglo-Saxon Christian accomplishments. Not on imperialism’s & colonialism’s impact.
Press Secretary Psaki demonstrates how those in power deal with these accusations.

But Albertan parents, curriculum experts and teachers are not in power.

A different strategy is required for those being ruled by far right white supremacists and Christian Nationalists.

While I understand this narrative is difficult to fully comprehend, I will again offer it for consumption and consideration.
Israel is a relatively young democracy that emerged shortly after WW2 in allied occupied territory. 1948 to be exact.

What many don’t realize is that at the end of the war, just like at the end of WW1, occupied territories were carved up and borders redrawn.
Those in power felt it was their purview to arbitrarily and autocratically determine the fate of nations and political special interests to claim territory and rejig world order.

WW1 leaders had reassigned territory of the former Ottoman Empire into the nation states of today.
