1. The heathen tradition survived the longest in Scandinavia. Like even in Sweden the killing of the king Sverker in 1156 CE might have been the last attempt at fighting against the crusade by the followers of the original religion. There was also a long struggle against Xtian
aggression in Norway well after the king converted & tried to impose his religion via missionaries. In Iceland the strong resistance resulted in compromise where the heathen practice was allowed even after u2 imposition. The polemical writings of u2s suggest that in some pockets
of Scandinavia the old IE religion persisted till at least the 1300s in the populace. 2. Even after conversion Snorri Sturluson an Icelander recorded heathen tradition with a relatively minor Xtian patina. 3. Even after Xtianization the Nordic authors recorded heathen traditions
in works like Gesta Daenorum of Saxo Grammaticus or the literature linked to Knuth the lord of the English &Scandinavians. In contrast in Southern "Germania" the destructive imposition of u2 by Charle etc completely destroyed the original religion. Hence, it is natural that the
better preservation of the Nordic material results in it getting more attention in any reconstruction or consideration of the Germanic religion. I've even met a couple of modern secular Swedes who are quite sympathetic to their original religion.

I've been surveying brood X in a 2 sq km region that I walk through by foot. For some reason they are not doing well so far. The emerge alright from their 17 year underground larval development from those holes and molt. You can see the molts lying about
They proceed to their final molt usually alright
However at least about 1/5-1/4 seem to fail and die even as they are emerging from the molt.
In the 1st pic the one to the right has died while molting. In the 2nd pic 1 had died while emerging and is being scavenged by ants.

When in school JN had invited cosmologists to Hoyle and the Burbridges to speak at the local university. When you're young you have the perhaps foolish tendency to ask questions to famous
people. The astronomy group had recently obtained access to (I think) the biggest telescope in our city then & with a schoolmate we managed to use it to sight a group of faint (for our scope) galaxies in Pegasus known as Stephan's Quintet (I've seen these only twice in my life).
It was an unforgettable sight, which spurred me to ask G.Burbridge if he thought all 5 galaxies were linked. He seemed pleased with the question as he was a "red shift skeptic" -- he felt they were all a real cluster. He too felt the type of cosmology (i.e. JN's preferred version
They say mask up at least with a surgical one🙂. Early in the pandemic due to चीन obfuscation we were all focused on washing hands. But those who knew some चीनाः personally knew that despite all the weird show they were doing like spraying disinfectant science.sciencemag.org/content/early/…
on the streets of Wuhan that they were all wearing mask. So we got a stock of surgical mask. Later the push was to get KN95s. Those were very hard to get but we go some KN94s from Korea. Then late in 2020 we got KN95s just in time for the local explosion. We still use the KN95s
for visiting grocery stores but the regular surgical in say the apartment corridors. For most part this has worked well. The key is not to take the damn mask off to speak -- avoid speaking face-to-face to people - wear it with proper sealing of the face.
The origin of the word shAluva/sAluva is not clear to me. I was initially certain that it has a Dravidian origin & it might still be so. It is found in the mantra to the manifestation of rudra know as sharabha. It is taken to mean hunting falcon in the dravidian languages. The
The famous vijayanagaran general sAluva ma~Ngu/ma~Ngi (ma~Ngaladeva) is said to have got that title because he swept down on the Mohammedans of Madhurai like a falcon as a general in kumAra kaMpaNa's army during the liberation of the south. Later his descendants founded the
short-lived sAluva dynasty of vijayanagara which was overthrown by kR^iShNadeva's clan. They were well-known as worshipers of nR^isiMha of ahobilam -- one wonder if the sAluva hence had connection to certain form of nR^isiMha with gaNDabheruNDa heads. But their origins seem to
Some further pA~ncharAtrika-s notes: Both saiddhAntika shaiva-s & pA~ncharAtrika have a hunting ritual where the simulate either rudra or viShNu going out on an hunt (an old IA memory now lodged in a tAntrika tradition). 1 of the days recommended for it in the PR tradition is
their equivalent of the dashamI following the autumnal navarAtrI which is termed the vIralakshmyutsava. Like with the shaiva version the image of viShNu was borne on a horse & the procession was accompanied by an armed entourage. The association with dashamI, the traditional H
day for campaign initiation (like H rulers routinely started out on campaigns against Mohammedan/preta tyrants on that day) suggests that it might have also been seen as a simulation of campaigns initiated by the god. It looks as though in some shaiva versions (e.g. raurava)
One of the enduring mysteries in the history of the vaiShNava mantra tradition is the ekAyana-shAkhA which the pa~ncharAtra affiliates itself with. It may be termed the rahasyAMnAya or the primal veda. Clearly, some exclusively focal pA~ncharAtra vaiShNava-s saw it as the root
from which the "common veda" emerged. The reason they give for the secondary nature of the common veda is that it worships other deities in addition to viShNu. They held that only viShNu can grant mokSha &the other deities were included for worldly attainments. It is notable that
the south Indian pA~ncharAtrika yAmuna divides the pA~ncharAtra bhAgavata-s into 4 categories: 1) The uninitiated servants who do temple maintenance. 2) The temple archaka-s who are v1s of a lower tier. 3) ekAyana-s who eschew the common shruti & only follow that shAkhA. 4) the
