Earlier, @60Minutes released their segment about trans health care in the US. To represent detrans people, they platformed a leader of GCCAN and recommended them as a resource without digging into her or the organization’s background.

Let’s be clear: GCCAN is a front group.

I was part of the group’s founding as Vice President and one of two trans members of the board. While the claim was noble, as GLS tries to portray in the segment, in practice the organization and its members lobby in opposition to health care equity.

Most members of the board, including its former President and its current President, are notorious for their disingenuous efforts to “reform” trans health by painting trans people as a social contagion that need to be controlled. This does nothing to help trans or detrans people.

@60Minutes failing to report the background of the people or the groups they are recommending feeds into an ongoing press battle that trans and detrans people have been facing. They end up platforming famous transphobes and shutting down trans voices. healthliberationnow.com/2021/04/03/tel…

Furthermore, there is no indication that they provide any actual support to trans or detrans people. The support group initiative - which was mine - never took off because of the group’s investment in transphobic lobbying. And the meetup was cancelled before COVID even hit.

Like many detrans people, lots of trans people have poor experiences with health care. We should be able to find unity to work toward collective liberation. Which means *journalists need to be platforming detrans people that aren’t serving an agenda.* They deserve better.

I don’t like having to do this. I deeply regret my contributions to the formation of this organization and it is now poised to do significant harm to trans and detrans people, including youth. For that, I am sorry. It upsets me that things have gotten to this point.

This is why I am putting concentrated effort into undoing the harm, not just by detailing how groups like GCCAN operate as mechanisms of organized transphobia, but how it connects to a much larger problem. This is but one example.

Health Liberation Now! exists because both Ky and I know firsthand the damage media can cause.

We are so, so sorry and are committed to doing the work needed to help our peers fight for liberation.
