At this moment the Israeli police is conducting a mass detention campaign against Palestinian citizens of Israel. Our people are under attack and we demand international protection. Shamefully most of the world has ignored our situation. Here are some facts (Thread).
We are over 20% of Israel’s population, 1.8 million approximately, living under a system of institutional discrimination & persecution described by @hrw, @btselem & Palestinian human rights organizations as #Apartheid: Ignoring this means complicity with this reality.
We took over our streets to peacefully demonstrate for #Jerusalem and our people’s rights. We were met with police brutality & complicity with Zionist extremists that attacked us, including in our homes, the streets, universities, work places, etc.
Our human rights organizations and lawyers have been doing a heroic work. Hereby I mention @AdalahEnglish. We have also called for international protection as it is clear that this is a state that protects those who attack us, with a government that incites against our rights.
We’re astonished by the fact that most western countries have remained silent. We’re yet to see any statement from @EUinIsrael. Germany’s @HeikoMaas was here and didn’t utter a single word regarding Palestinian lives. Other visiting FMs such as 🇨🇿🇸🇰🇬🇷 didn’t mention us.
Tomorrow @SecBlinken will be coming to the region. The US claims to support “equal measures of freedom and security” for Israelis and Palestinians, but referring to Israel as a “Jewish state” only adds to the problem. Is he going to do anything to support equality? @StateDept_NEA
Meanwhile we praise the statement of the UN human rights commissioner @mbachelet reminding Israel of its obligations to treat and protect all citizens with equality. Here her statement ohchr.org/EN/NewsEvents/…
We also praise the members of the #EU parliament that mentioned our case in last week’s special session. They’re truly representing the hundreds of thousands that have demonstrated for justice, freedom and equality.
Overall we thank all expressions of solidarity from peoples worldwide and call upon their governments not to ignore our reality. We are calling for equality, this shouldn’t be too difficult to endorse!
There will be no comprehensive solution for Israel/Palestine that doesn’t address our rights, including full equality. We’re indigenous to this land, not tourists or strangers. Quoting the late Tawfik Zayyad “in Lydda, in Ramleh, in the Galilee we shall remain”.
