NEW: @DHSOIG says Trump administration "removed at least 348 parents separated from their children without documenting that those parents wanted to leave" kids behind in U.S. and some records didn't say if ICE first "gave the parent the option to reunify." oig.dhs.gov/sites/default/…
H/T to @Haleaziz who is going through the report here:
"In some cases, ICE removed separated parents without their children even though ICE officers effecting their removal knew the parents wanted to bring their children with them." (Page 10)
Here’s our report: Trump admin deported 348 separated parents alone without documenting if they wanted to leave their kids behind. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
Biden admin responds via DHS spox:
“This report’s findings are a tragic reminder of how parents and children were cruelly separated by the prior administration. We are working tirelessly to reunite separated families and rebuild our immigration system so our laws are...” (1/2)
“... administered fairly and humanely. We concur with the recommendations in the Office of Inspector General’s report and will continue to take actions to build on the progress we have made.” (2/2)
.@SenatorDurbin’s response, who, as chair of Senate Judiciary, could hold hearings on the separation policy to investigate given jurisdiction over DOJ. Arguably, “challenge we face now” is whether Durbin or Biden admin will hold Trump admin accountable. Not simply moving forward.

In March I asked @SecMayorkas about @Haleaziz’s reporting DHS was deporting Haitians despite the fact Biden admin knew they’d be sending them to danger.
“We have an obligation to make lasting improvements to our civil immigration detention system,” said @SecMayorkas. “This marks an important first step to realizing that goal.”
Today DHS also announced it will discontinue the use of another ICE dentition center in MA.
While we're talking bipartisan commissions, a reminder lawmakers including @AOC called for one to investigate Trump's forced separation of over 5,500 parents from kids, called "torture" by @P4HR and "government-sanctioned child abuse" by @AmerAcadPeds. vox.com/policy-and-pol…
This month @SecMayorkas told me accountability for those responsible for separations could be looked at by the Biden reunification task force when it’s “far further along” in the process of putting families back together.
President Biden himself called the policy "criminal" in the final debate with President Trump, and said there would be a "thorough, thorough investigation" of it as President-Elect.
NEW: @SecMayorkas brought me into his office and showed me a photo on his wall of a Haitian boy after 2010 quake. I asked why admin hasn’t given Haitians temporary protected status. He said “it’s still under review... certainly is uppermost in my mind.”
I first asked @SecMayorkas about TPS for Haiti when we spoke in March.
EXCLUSIVE: Biden admin may bring whole families to U.S. to reunite with separated children, not just parents. Task force is working on a process where “immediate family members," like siblings and stepparents, "can also apply." With @JuliaEAinsley. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
In an exclusive interview with NBC News, Mayorkas said, “We are very much focused on providing stability to the reunited families, and not just for her but for the family as a unit,” referring to a mother who had just been reunited with her son. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
.@MichelleBrane, ED of the task force to reunify families, said her group is working on a process where “immediate family members can also apply. That includes siblings, another, you know the partner or spouse, other parents if they're in the picture.” nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
After three years, Bryan will be reunited this week with his mom, who was deported after they were separated by the Trump administration in 2017. Three other families will also be reunited this week. More in our latest reporting here, with @JuliaEAinsley. nbcnews.com/politics/immig…
Last night I mentioned to @maddow that Bryan, who was separated from his mom by Trump over three years ago and will be reunited this week, graduated HS early and just got a job working for a pro bono legal service provider for migrant kids. Here’s more details, from @ImmDef.
