The best kept secret in e-commerce? Products with BUILT-IN demand
I accidentally discovered this in 2018 and it completely changed the way I find products to sell (not to mention generated me over $1M+ in sales)
Forget “winning products” — this is way easier
THREAD
This is a method for finding products to sell with e-commerce / dropshipping
The basic concept is instead of selling any random product, you sell a product that “piggybacks” off an existing (often expensive) product that’s ALREADY popular
This usually takes the form of an accessory or upgrade
(If someone spent hundreds or thousands of dollars on a product, a $30 accessory that improves it or makes it more unique is a pretty easy sell)
Prime example:
Apple Watches
In Q4 2020 Apple sold 98 Apple Watches per minute. That’s 1.5 watches PER SECOND. An absolutely insane level of demand
That insane demand created an entirely new market — the Apple Watch accessories market
Custom straps, cases, etc. — that let people make their Apple Watches cooler, more customized, more unique — popped up as soon as the first Apple Watch was released
I was fortunate enough to get into this early, right at the beginning of 2018
I created one of the first Shopify stores selling third-party Apple Watch straps based on a random idea I got while working my pizza delivery job
12 months later that store had generated over $1.5M in sales (and completely changed my life)
I didn’t realize it at the time, but what I was doing was piggybacking off the insane success of the Apple Watch and using it to get my own (small) piece of the pie
How this works in a basic sense:
1. Start with existing product that’s already popular 2. Identify potential accessories, upgrades, etc. 3. Do research to come up with best option 4. Test it!
The thing about this is that timing is extremely important
The reason this worked for me is because I was early. Nowadays the Apple Watch accessories market is flooded and it’s not nearly as easy as it was a few years ago
That said, there’s always new opportunities
Some ideas for you:
- Teslas are becoming extremely popular, there are hundreds of different upgrades for them (stickers, decals, trim upgrades, etc.)
- Apple just released AirTags, I recently found a brand selling AirTag cases, that could be something worth looking into
There’s also plenty of more niche options that might not be as popular in the mainstream but still have plenty of volume to make a good living from
- Boat or motorcycle accessories
- Computer upgrades
- Replacement parts for popular products
The list goes on
By piggybacking off existing products that people already love and spend money on you can carve out your own little section of the market and skip a lot of the headache that tends to come with finding products to sell
And dassssit!
