🐭Mice have been found inside homes, classrooms and hospitals.

“People are putting the legs of their beds in buckets or pots of water, but the mice are still climbing curtains, jumping onto their beds and biting them," Xavier Martin, farmer from the Liverpool Plains, NSW
The extent of the plague was revealed on the government app, Mouse Alert, that showed infestations from southeast Queensland to the NSW-Victoria border.

Australian farmers are being urged to use the app to urged to help drive away a growing plague

The Centre for Invasive Species Solutions warn:
🛢️Grain growing areas suffer damage to crops and to stored grain

💡Rural businesses suffer damage from mice chewing stock and electrical wires

❗️Communities experience high levels of stress through the constant presence of mice
The app was created in 2014 and has never recorded a plague on this scale before.

It said mice will reach a peak in late autumn 2021, coincident with sowing of winter crops.

🔜It warns that rodents will then move into homes and sheds as temperatures drop
Farmers are currently using poison and traps to combat the spread of rodents.

The government has applied for “urgent approval” to use a poison called bromadiolone on farms.

❌Environmentalists warn the chemical will likely kill animals that prey on mice, like birds and snakes
The NSW government announced a A$50 million mouse plague package which includes free bait.

It is estimated that the infestations have caused at least A$100 million in damage to crops in NSW alone so far

Mr Martin, Vice-President of NSW Farmers Association, said damage "will easily exceed $1B"

“At this stage we [expect] the multiplier effect for the economy to approach $4-5B dollars very quickly. That’s bread, beer, grain for chicken and other livestock"
