Arizona audit investigation update: The Arizona Senate has agreed to begin producing Senate President Karen Fann’s emails to us on a rolling basis. The first emails document Fann’s extensive involvement in the preparations for the audit.
americanoversight.org/arizona-audit-…
We obtained emails between Senator Fann and Christina Bobb, a reporter for the far-right news organization OANN, which at one point had an exclusive livestream deal for broadcasting the audit. Bobb has also led a fundraising effort for the audit.
americanoversight.org/document/arizo…
In an April 5 email, Fann sent Bobb a statement reacting to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors’ refusal to work with the Senate on the audit. Fann accuses the BOS of refusing to “help the Senate re-instill voter confidence in elections.”
The records provide new details about the negotiations for the lease of the Coliseum, which was a precondition to Maricopa County delivering the subpoenaed materials. The emails show Senate leadership, including Senate Majority Leader Rick Gray, was looped in.
Fann also forwarded Logan two inquiries regarding Cyber Ninjas from @ArizonaMirror reporter @jeremyduda.
We obtained these emails in response to public records requests. Separately, we have an ongoing lawsuit against the Senate for records related to the audit and Cyber Ninjas. Learn more here:

New documents: We obtained records from summer 2020 in which FDA officials expressed frustration with scientists at the NIH in the days before the planned authorization of convalescent plasma as a Covid-19 treatment, a decision heavily promoted by Trump.

The emails, also reported on by Politico, offer an inside look into the federal government’s internal disagreement about the authorization.

On Aug. 18, FDA Media Relations Director Stephanie Caccomo sent top officials a message saying that the @nytimes was planning to run a story about how NIH Director Collins and Dr. Fauci had cautioned against authorizing plasma treatment.

A recent DHS OIG report says ICE did not consistently give separated migrant parents the ability to bring their children with them as they were deported.

We uncovered a 2018 email showing that ICE wasn't always giving parents reunification forms in the right language. Image
”We are just hearing from advocates that in administering its new form on family reunification prior to removal, ICE doesn’t seem to be providing effective language assistance,” wrote a government employee from DHS’s civil rights office.

”In particular,” they continued, “we’ve heard reports of Brazilians being given the form in Spanish without Portuguese interpretation, but if that’s happening I have to wonder about the Mayan or other indigenous languages too.”

Vehicular attacks on protesters are an increasingly common tactic used to disrupt anti-racist protests. That’s why it’s so concerning that some state legislatures are backing bills that shield drivers who hit protesters from criminal liability. Here’s how we’re investigating. Image
A Florida law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in April carries harsher penalties for crimes carried out in relation to protests. It also bans demonstrators from blocking roadways, while shielding drivers from criminal liability if they hit protesters.

We submitted records requests to the Florida governor’s office, Senate, and House of Representatives requesting communications regarding the bill.

A 9/11-style commission is the best option for investigating the Jan. 6 attacks. But if Republican opposition makes it unlikely to pass in the Senate, @AREvers explains in @justsecurity why a House select committee would be the best alternative.
justsecurity.org/76625/the-next…
A select committee, preferably in the House, is the best alternative for several reasons. First, Pelosi could create one by majority vote and she could do it quickly. Members and staff would need to be recruited, but they are already on hand in Congress.
Second, a select committee could be given subpoena power comparable to other House committees.

Third, congressional committees have special access privileges to Trump administration documents, including White House documents, that have been sent to the National Archives.

We obtained records through #FOIA that show Newt Gingrich made an aggressive 5G pitch to Trump’s FCC. His proposal aligned with the business interests of Rivada, a company backed by long-time Trump supporter Peter Thiel and Karl Rove.
americanoversight.org/inside-newt-gi…
The records we obtained reveal a series of emails from 2019 in which Gingrich arranged discussions with the FCC’s then-Chairman Pai and staff about 5G and China.
He also shared messaging and a report that outlined Rivada’s call for Defense Department-controlled spectrum to create what critics have described as a nationalized 5G network.

The Biden administration plans to keep the Trump-era Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement office, which was created to advance the Trump admin.’s anti-immigrant agenda. DHS intends to continue the office, known as VOICE, with a new name. #FOIAFriday

VOICE helped promote the Trump administration’s narrative of falsely tying immigrants to crime. Records we obtained show that during the Trump admin., Stephen Miller frequently pushed stories that portrayed immigrants as violent criminals, reported @TIME.

We also uncovered records of meetings between far-right anti-immigration groups and Barbara Gonzales, who led VOICE during the Trump administration.
