We obtained records through #FOIA that show Newt Gingrich made an aggressive 5G pitch to Trump’s FCC. His proposal aligned with the business interests of Rivada, a company backed by long-time Trump supporter Peter Thiel and Karl Rove.
americanoversight.org/inside-newt-gi…
The records we obtained reveal a series of emails from 2019 in which Gingrich arranged discussions with the FCC’s then-Chairman Pai and staff about 5G and China.
He also shared messaging and a report that outlined Rivada’s call for Defense Department-controlled spectrum to create what critics have described as a nationalized 5G network.
We will continue to investigate influence over key issues of public interest through our records requests to federal, state, and local agencies.

Arizona audit investigation update: The Arizona Senate has agreed to begin producing Senate President Karen Fann’s emails to us on a rolling basis. The first emails document Fann’s extensive involvement in the preparations for the audit.
americanoversight.org/arizona-audit-…
We obtained emails between Senator Fann and Christina Bobb, a reporter for the far-right news organization OANN, which at one point had an exclusive livestream deal for broadcasting the audit. Bobb has also led a fundraising effort for the audit.
americanoversight.org/document/arizo…
In an April 5 email, Fann sent Bobb a statement reacting to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors’ refusal to work with the Senate on the audit. Fann accuses the BOS of refusing to “help the Senate re-instill voter confidence in elections.” Image

A 9/11-style commission is the best option for investigating the Jan. 6 attacks. But if Republican opposition makes it unlikely to pass in the Senate, @AREvers explains in @justsecurity why a House select committee would be the best alternative.
justsecurity.org/76625/the-next…
A select committee, preferably in the House, is the best alternative for several reasons. First, Pelosi could create one by majority vote and she could do it quickly. Members and staff would need to be recruited, but they are already on hand in Congress.
Second, a select committee could be given subpoena power comparable to other House committees.

Third, congressional committees have special access privileges to Trump administration documents, including White House documents, that have been sent to the National Archives.

The Biden administration plans to keep the Trump-era Victims of Immigration Crime Engagement office, which was created to advance the Trump admin.’s anti-immigrant agenda. DHS intends to continue the office, known as VOICE, with a new name. #FOIAFriday
time.com/6048445/donald…
VOICE helped promote the Trump administration’s narrative of falsely tying immigrants to crime. Records we obtained show that during the Trump admin., Stephen Miller frequently pushed stories that portrayed immigrants as violent criminals, reported @TIME.
americanoversight.org/investigation/…
We also uncovered records of meetings between far-right anti-immigration groups and Barbara Gonzales, who led VOICE during the Trump administration.

Supporters of the “Big Lie” want to undermine faith in our democracy by repeating the partisan audit in Arizona’s Maricopa County around the country.

That’s why transparency is so important around the Arizona audit. So we’re going to court. THREAD
Joe Biden won Arizona in the 2020 election but Trump supporters have tried to dispute these results since November.

First, Rudy Giuliani and some AZ lawmakers held an unofficial “hearing” in which participants made unsubstantiated allegations about the election’s integrity. 2/
Then, in December, a group of Arizona Trump supporters tried to replace the valid presidential electors from their state — who had been chosen by voters in free and fair elections — with a bogus slate of pro-Trump electors. We obtained a copy of the phony certificate. 3/

NEW LAWSUIT: We’re suing the Arizona Senate for failing to release documents related to the partisan audit of the 2020 presidential ballots in Maricopa County. #AZAudit #AZleg

After the Senate announced Cyber Ninjas—a firm with no prior experience with election results whose founder has spread conspiracy theories—would lead the audit, we launched an investigation & filed records requests for documents related to the audit.
We asked for public release of key documents from the audit, including the Senate’s communications with Cyber Ninjas, budget information, security measures, techniques, and more.

We’ve been investigating government contracts with Clearview.

Clearview’s software lets users compare photos of faces with a database of 3 billion photos taken from other Internet sources. ICE, CBP, DOJ, and the FBI have all reportedly used the software.
Last year, we #FOIA’d the Trump administration CIA for records of communications with Clearview representatives. The agency said it will neither confirm nor deny the existence of any such records.

In June 2020, the FBI also said it would neither confirm nor deny the existence of records regarding the facial recognition software company Clearview AI, Inc.
