Five minutes to go! Grab a drink, and get on board the time machine back to 1991 with us and @thesociallondon...
Here are the tunes... mixcloud.com/soniccathedral…
So, here we are in the Black Lodge at the very end of Season Two of Twin Peaks – which was broadcast in the UK on BBC2 on June 18, 1991...
After it took a three-week break in May for the snooker!
Anyway, this first tune for @thesociallondon is a cash in ‘dance mix’ of ‘Falling’ by a Dutch outfit called One-Eyed Jacks (natch). Notable mainly for the line in the rap that says “Is this Laura Palmer on a disco biscuit?” 😂
This one really is Julee Cruise – the Tibetan mix of ‘Rockin’ Back Inside My Heart’ was apparently commissioned to do a ‘Tom’s Diner’ which wasn't really necessary, but I kinda like it!
I loved Twin Peaks, although for some reason my dad always insisted on watching it too :-/
This has a medieval Twin Peaks vibe. The most unlikely band on @MuteUK ever and source of much teenage sniggering, Miranda Sex Garden’s ‘Gush Forth My Tears’ remixed by Thrash from The Orb and Fortran 5...
Think they confused a few indie crowds bitd when they cropped up as a support. Remember them doing this song on Friday Night At The Dome...
I wonder if the members of Miranda Sex Garden ever made the joke ‘you don't have to be madrigal to work here, but it helps’? 🤡
Next up is Fortran 5 with their Saint Etienne-esque should’ve been a hit ‘Heart On The Line’...
(The one on the mix is the album version, but the video is the single remix by Vince Clarke, which is also great and includes some nice Chart Show facts!)
Ah, @KurtisMantronix and the 91 version of ‘(I'm) Adjustin’ My Mic’ from ‘The Incredible Sound Machine’...
Is this hip-hop enough for you @anthonyrpearce?
Can someone put my mind at rest and let me know the sample at the start? It’s a Hi record, I'm sure... 🤔
Mantronix produced the original version of @paulhaig’s 'Flight X’. This brilliant remix by Boilerhouse – with a rap from The Voice of Reason – came out on a 12” in 1991...
@paulhaig A bit of Joey Beltram and ‘Subsonic Trance’. UK release for ‘Energy Flash’ was in 1991, or so @discogs tells me. Either way, this is ace!
@paulhaig @discogs It also leads nicely to the classic Beltram mix of ‘Dominator’ by Human Resource. Have we (twin) peaked too early? It’s not even 7!
@paulhaig @discogs Segue of the evening is coming up shortly...
Quite proud of this... from ‘Dominator’ into ‘Number One Dominator’ by Top!
Oasis should've covered this...
I saw Top supporting The Farm at Exeter Uni in March 1991. Wonder if @thomyorke was there?!
Oh, and that’s the late Allan Wills – founder of @DeltaSonicRec on drums there 🖤
Keeping it in Liverpool, here are @thestairsuk (starring @edgarsummertyme) with ‘Flying Machine’, a nice Byrdsy B-side from their ‘Weed Bus’ single...
Hmm weird YouTube link there. Think the version on the mix is different from the one on their debut album ‘Mexican R&B’ (bet @LoisLeafyLane knows!)
Saw The Stairs playing an instore in HMV in Newcastle, but that must’ve been later, early 1992 @ClairDolphin?
The legend that is @RogerMcGuinn made his comeback in 1991. He was finally ‘Back From Rio’. I think at the time I probably thought he was an old has-been. He was only 49 ffs...
There's a nice Twin Peaks connection to this track, ‘Car Phone’, because it features a spoken word section by @OKimmyrobertson – aka receptionist Lucy Moran!
I learned about The Byrds from this guy, Jim Beattie, who 12-stringed his way all over early @primalscream and then Spirea X. Their album ‘Fireblade Skies’ was the first record (tape) that @ClairDolphin ever bought me!
‘Chlorine Dream’ was their debut single for @4AD_Official. Here they are playing it (and being interviewed) on Snub TV in January 1991...
Jim’s old band had moved on by this point. Next up is the ace Graham Massey mix of ‘Don’t Fight It, Feel It’, featuring the late, great @TheDJohnsonR3AL 🖤
Weirdly, I couldn’t find that version on YouTube, so here's a great live version from The Late Show in 1991...
(Think Bobby should've left Denise to it there!)
Mr Massey’s band @state808 were on a roll in 1991 – the Heavy Mix of their single ‘Lift’ is so great...
We now go into a little Moby (@thelittleidiot) section (no, come back) starting with his (successful) attempt to cheer up the @petshopboys’ ‘Miserablism’...
Moby’s remix of LFO’s ‘Tan Ta Ra’ is still amazing, too. All that coffee table advert music was still years off...
And here is Moby himself with his breakthrough hit ‘Go’. This Woodtick Mix famously sampled ‘Laura Palmer’s Theme’ from... Twin Peaks...
This shit isn’t thrown together, y’know!
I used to live with an idiot who loved this and went round shouting ‘Go!’ in our faces all the time. He stole things from me and I hated him, and consequently – for many years until right now – this song!
Another Twin Peaks cash in, this is Twin Freaks (geddit?) with the Moonless Night remix of ‘Agent Cooper Lurvs Coffee’...
And how else could we end, but with the mighty KLF and ‘Build A Fire’ from their album ‘The White Room’, which features those two notes from the theme to... oh, you know what!
Thanks for joining us on here tonight. More soon. We will be doing this IRL at @thesociallondon soon. Just sorting out some details, but if you’re anywhere near that London… KEEP JULY 24 FREE! ✌️
Right, reluctantly all aboard the time machine back to 2021. I think it’s been a bit of a slow news day...

30 years ago today, the word “shoe-gazers” appeared for the very first time in print...
It crept into a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it down-page news article in the Sampled Notes column in the May 25 issue of @NME which had some info about the forthcoming ‘Holding Our Breath’ EP and live dates by @slowdiveofficial...
In it, they were described as “hotly-tipped shoe-gazers” (with a hyphen, natch)...

@thesociallondon @worldoftwistuk The football commentary was from the @SunderlandAFC v Newcastle derby match on November 17, 1991. Peter Davenport put Sunderland one up, but the game ended as a 1-1 draw (we'll ignore that)...

So, it’s 1991. I have just turned 18, and the world is my oyster. Except I am stuck in the cultural desert of North Devon with just a few record shops and the music press to keep me sane...
