SSI was key in helping me gain independence, getting me through college by stabilizing my living conditions, particularly during the long summer months. But it barely covered my rent back then & I incurred a lot of debt. It's time to increase benefits. #DemolishDisabledPoverty
1 of the biggest probs w/ SSI is how much it limits earnings. This significantly affects disabled ppl being able 2 get out of impoverished circumstances. My check was always affected even whenever I was able 2 get small gigs 2 help supplement my income. #DemolishDisabledPoverty
We must raise the income limits & asset limits, which are extremely outdated. The last time it was updated in 30 years. Disabled people can't live on $794 per month with only $2k in assets. Being disabled is expensive & we are holding disabled ppl back. #DemolishDisabledPoverty
.@Mattbc's thread shows just how popular these ideas are. @DataProgress polled voters and found overwhelmingly support for numerous updates the disability community calls for, including increasing benefits and raising asset and income limits. #DemolishDisabledPoverty
This is not what transracial means and having people do this puts real harm on transracial adoptees and is just racist. Transracial adoptees exist and our experiences shouldn't be redefined by people like you.
Transracial adoption is a term that has been around since the 1980s, referring to the colonization of BIPOC children into generally white western families. Our experiences around identity, culture, & biographical history are linked to the transracial adoptee identity.
Many transracial adoptees continue to struggle with their racial identities. Not because they want to appropriate another racial group but because they have been colonized into white families and stripped of their heritage. Some spend years regaining that connection.
