An update for those who kindly reached out after a very unpleasant encounter with a man who aggressively harassed me on the street Monday, made comments about sexually assaulting me and advanced toward me physically.
Ottawa Police identified the man and spoke to him about what happened. The police told me they made it clear this kind of behaviour is not OK. The police told me they are not laying charges, there are a number of criteria that have to be met and this doesn't check all the boxes.
The police officer I spoke with said if there is one message the police would like to get out it is: CALL THEM when something like this happens. Without a call they can't track if there are larger patterns happening or address it. +1 from me, call the police
I would also add this from my personal experience, ask the responding officer to file a report. Calling the police does not automatically generate a report. If there is no report, there will be no tracking even if you called 911. Ask to have a report filed on the incident.
I appreciate the officers who handled this investigation and acted quickly. They're also aware of reports of similar behaviour by a man in Centretown.

Finally, I spoke to an officer who has a lot of experience with these kinds of cases. He's not working this file. He told me even when people are charged and convicted, they're not really detained. He identified this as a major concern when it comes to violence against women.
