1. Today is May 29.

A day that was supposed to be our democracy day but moved to June 12 in memory of Abiola

Let me take you back to Abiola's journey, how he was supposed to be Chairman of IBB Transitional Council which may have changed the course of history etc.

THREAD!!!
2. In 1982, MKO Abiola was a leading national executive for the NPN (National Party of Nigeria) and one of the major financiers.

He had eyes to contest for Presidency on the platform of the party in 1983.

However, party stalwarts frustrated him.
3. They simply didn't trust MKO Abiola. He got angry and quit politics in 1982.

He later changed his mind and got affected by the ban on former Politicians and public office holders by IBB.

The ban was later lifted and he joined SDP in January 1993.
4. He was made the party's flagbearer at its convention in Jos in March that same year

Atiku came 3rd in that convention

It was believed that Abiola used money to buy his way into relevance with huge donations in the party here and there that other aspirants couldn't match him
5. Alhaji Tofa, who like Abiola was national executive member of NPN. He was Financial Secretary of the party.

He picked the Presidential ticket of the NRC party in PH on March 1993.

Both men were close to IBB
6. Some suspected that IBB knew from the start that he was not going to handover to civilians but played along hoping that the Politicians would be greedy and scuttle it themselves.

This was not to be the case.
7. IBB gave Abiola N35m as support and wished Abiola to become Chairman of the Transitional Committee.

Abacha seeing the future, violently opposed it and said Abiola would just be member of the committee.

Abiola insisted that he would be Chairman or nothing
8. At the end, it was nothing and Abiola could no longer control the narrative of how things went from there.

Now to the issues...
9. Members of the Defence and Security Council instigated by Abacha wanted both men disqualified.

They didn't see Abiola as someone morally fit to be President.

They raised allegations that he was a govt contractor (which was mostly true) and was all about the money
10. IBB reasoned with them that stopping the election would make Nigerians angry and suspicious of the army and asked that they be patient and let the Politicians self-destruct themselves.

But, Abiola proved to be so popular that even some NRC members secretly supported him
11. The military was not impressed. The IBB script was not going as planned.

What was to be done???

Now comes Sen. Arthur Nzeribe, a shadowy powerful man from Imo state. His body, the ABN (Association for Better Nigeria) went to the High Court on June 10 to stop elections
12. Abimbola Davies his deputy prayed the court to cancel it based on irregularities and corruption.

How????

Justice Bassey Ita Ikpeme (Now late) restrained NEC from conducting elections
13. The Military now had an excuse!

But IBB the evil genius he was, told NEC to disregard the court order. NEC led by Prof. Nwosu went ahead with the election.

It was a bobby trap.
14. It was the freest election in Nigerian history and went smoothly.

Nzeribe struck again!

He asked an Abuja court to stop them from announcing results.

ABN argued that NEC defied a subsisting court order
15. Justice Dahiru Saleh agreed with ABN.

He ordered NEC not to announce results.

Prof. Nwosu, a politically naive man appealed the judgement.

All hell broke loose!
16. Court orders started flying left and right from Lagos, Benin and Abuja.

11 days later on June 23, IBB annulled the election. He dissolved NEC and sacked Nwosu.

Worthy to note is that the annulment statement was unsigned, undated, and carried no govt letterhead or seal

Why?
17. It may have been determined member of the military like Abacha that forced IBB's hands.

Chief Duro Onabule, Chief press secretary to IBB was not aware of the annulment and was upset when he heard. Aikhomu, the VP was also not aware.

Anyways history will judge.

END!

1. The Gideon Orkar Coup of 1990 (Attempt on IBB's life)

How it went, why he attempted it (One of which was the excision of 5 Northern states and eventual breakup of Nigeria) and lessons learnt.

THREAD!!!!!
2. It was April 21st 1990.

It was the fasting period of Ramadan and IBB saw off his last visitor of the day at Dodan Barracks.

He went upstairs to the family quarters and started fiddling with the television. He tried BBC, CNN etc
3. He slept off by 2am.

His wife Maryam woke him up and was shouting that she is hearing heavy shootings outside.

He told her that nothing was going on.

He was wrong.

1. Easter!

Let's talk about the assassination of Dele Giwa. Never before heard account of his death.

Scattered accounts from fmr SSS Director Joe Obuseh (from my place), IBB's Autobiography, TV coverage and actual newspaper clippings from that time.

THREAD!
2. Dele Giwa made his name through columns in the Daily Times and Sunday Concord (He was pioneer editor. Also owned by Abiola).

He co-founded News watch Magazine with Ray Ekpu, Yakubu Mohammed and Dan Agnese.

Newswatch with those big names became an instant success.
3. How did he die?

He received a letter bomb which killed him.

1. Happy Easter.

No work today so I have a bit of spare time ...

Today we do a little bit of Nigerian History Class.

The details of the how IBB put Nigeria into the OIC (Organization of Islamic Countries) and it's resultant effect.

THREAD!
2. Early January 1986, IBB almost brought Nigeria to a religious war when he "smuggled" Nigeria into the OIC.

The French news agency, AFP broke the news that fateful evening and The Guardian newspaper picked it up.

The agitation by Nigerian Muslims for Nigeria to join
3. Started in September 1969 by the Late Alhaji Abubakar Gumi, (yes.... Sheik Gumi's father) who was at the time the Grand khadi of the entire Northern Nigeria.

He headed the Nigerian delegation to a meeting of Arab countries in Morocco.

Gen. Gowon, who was head of state...

A four year old girl tells her mum to say Hi to aunty Ngozi and points to an empty side of the house. Her mom pays no mind to it and continues doing chores.
30mins later, mom gets a call that Aunty Ngozi died an hour ago

OR seeing a dead person in another city

Anyone relate?
Maybe I will read through this thread tomorrow morning because "fear-fear".
Maybe I will drop my own experience.

My father's funeral took months to plan as per Senior Chief.

I saw him in dreams in between looking very tired and tattered saying "Why have we refused to let him rest". I told him it wasn't my decison to make. He moaned and wailed.

1. Let me give you a history on Agricultural programmes from independence to date

I will try to simplify for your understanding

THREAD!
2. In the beginning shortly after independence (1960), there was rural and urban divide.

Poor people lived in the rural areas, comfortable people stayed in the urban cities.

As petro-naira flooded Nigeria, a great rural-urban drift began. This means people left village
3. To come to the city.

Lagos as the capital of Nigeria took a big hit.

People were happy to sleep under bridges or inside broken down vehicles - to await the arrival of good times.

For them, life in the city was infinitely better than village.

Evelyn Yankyaa was very close to me at some point in my life and she is currently ill.

Evelyn Yankyaa is suffering from multiple organs failure caused by Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE).

We did our part then, she said she was better. Clearly not. ImageImageImage
Because her condition was not detected on time, Evelyn now has chronic kidney failure, heart problems, anaemia and other organs failure.

She is currently on medication to address the immunity disorder.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for her ailment.
She has to be on drugs for the rest of her life. If she stops the drugs, all her organs will fail and she will die

She has used all her funds

N4m+ so far spent on 25 dialysis,1 heart surgery, several pints of blood transfusions and on drugs and tests from March 2020 till today
