In a small town just outside of Oslo, Norway sits Borregaard Manor. It’s a royal estate, originally built of stone and timber in the Middle Ages by King Olav Haraldsson. A peaceful place, where Norwegian Kings would spend their summers. #velshi
2/13
In 1993, it became the site where the most elusive peace in the world was almost achieved. During 14 meetings over a span of 8 months, Israeli officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization met under the veil of secrecy. #velshi
3/13
They sought to work out a deal that would try to end decades of misunderstanding, mistrust, and bloodshed between their people. It started out as an unofficial meeting between PLO officials and two Israeli professors. #velshi
4/13
The Norwegians created an intimate space for discussion between people, rather than between feuding authorities. At the time, it was illegal for Israeli officials to even speak to members of the PLO, let alone negotiate with them. #velshi
5/13
Borregaard Manor became one of several sites in Norway where Israelis and Palestinians lived under one roof, eating meals together, chatting and even laughing, sometimes, well into the night. #velshi
6/13
The negotiators developed a knack for telling the right joke at the right time to break the tension. The group - who once shared a mutual hatred for one another, developed mutual respect. #velshi
7/13
Eventually they pulled off what no one thought was possible. They drafted an agreement that would become the Oslo Accords. #velshi
8/13
In the monumental document, Israelis and Palestinians agreed to recognize the other’s right to exist, and it shifted authority of certain territories from Israeli to Palestinian control. #velshi
9/13
The Oslo Accords were signed on September 13, 1993 at the White House. Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and PLO chairman Yassir Arafat shook hands with President Bill Clinton standing by. It was an inspiring moment for the world. #velshi
10/13
In 1702, the original Borregaard Mansion was swept into the river by a massive landslide. Maybe it foreshadowed the fate of the Oslo Accords. The Oslo meetings sparked hope that two sworn adversaries could find common ground. #velshi
11/13
It was the closest Israelis and Palestinians had ever gotten to peace. But, like the mansion, it, too, was swept away by a torrent of violence, recrimination, even an assassination. Those 8 months of negotiation couldn’t overcome such deep-rooted enmity. #velshi
12/13
In July 2000, still trying to revive the effort, both sides met at Camp David to settle their remaining issues. But a final deal was never reached, and the second Palestinian Intifada, or uprising, began. #velshi
13/13
We all know how this story ends, because it doesn’t. Israelis & Palestinians are still fighting. People are still dying. This cycle of violence cannot go on forever. Peace was not inescapable in that tiny Norwegian town in 1993. And it is not inescapable today. #velshi

The American Civil War claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history, accounting for more American military deaths than World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War and the War in Afghanistan combined. #velshi

An estimated 620,000 soldiers were killed, requiring the creation of national cemeteries for the first time. By July 1862, just two years after the start of the Civil War, 14 National Cemeteries - Arlington among them - had been established. #velshi
3/11
They later became burial places for all U.S. servicemembers. Every year we celebrate Memorial Day in honor of the men and women who have died fighting for this country. United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. #velshi

It’s pretty obvious that as a U.S. politician, you probably shouldn’t insult the military. Military policy, maybe, but not the people who actually defend this country. It’s such an easy landmine to avoid. #velshi

Senator Ted Cruz recently retweeted a video which started out featuring a buff, bald Russian soldier with brute masculinity dripping off him like sweat. #velshi

The video is spliced with this bright animated ad that tells the story of why a female American soldier, raised by two mothers, chose to join the U.S. Army. #velshi

Democracy relies expressly on the ability to form an opinion and express it. Which is why what happened this week to the journalist @nhannahjones is so troubling. #velshi

Ms. Hannah-Jones is a friend of VELSHI, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, a Peabody award winner and a genius in the literal sense; she was awarded the MacArthur Genius grant in 2017. #velshi

She was recently appointed to a prestigious role at the University of North Carolina’s respected journalism school. A role that’s been historically followed by the recipient being granted tenure at the University. #velshi

The first known group of Asian American and Pacific Islanders, the Filipinos, are known to have settled in Louisiana in 1763. That’s not a fact a lot of Americans know. Nor do a lot of non-Asian Americans know about Vincent Chin. #velshi
2/7
Vincent Chin was a 27-year-old Chinese American living in Detroit in the 80’s. Those of us who were around back then will remember the world dealing with the aftermath of a global oil crisis that drove gas prices up and made big American cars passe. #velshi

Ford, GM and Chrysler collapsed as Americans embraced smaller, more fuel-efficient Japanese cars like Nissans, Hondas and Toyotas. Tens of thousands of jobs were lost and some Americans blamed Japan. #velshi

Israel has a right to exist and to defend itself. That’s an indisputable fact. But so do Palestinians. And that's a fact that is often ignored. Palestinians are, at best, third class citizens in the nation of their birth. #velshi

The idea that it’s even remotely controversial to call what Israel has imposed on Palestinians a form of Apartheid is laughable. One look at a current map of Israel, Gaza and the Occupied Territories conjures up only one other example: Apartheid Era in South Africa. #velshi

The Israeli government, on an ongoing basis, declares parcels of land on which Palestinians live to be either of military or archeological importance, causing residents to be evicted. Sometimes there’s a court case, and almost always, the Palestinians lose. #velshi

“If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?” is a famous line from Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit, “Hamilton” though Alexander Hamilton may not have said it that way, exactly, in real life. #velshi

It is the sentiment that without knowing who you are and what you believe in, you are doomed to be manipulated. And that is the situation in which today’s Republican Party finds itself. #velshi
3/10
Remember when the GOP was the Party of Lincoln? A party whose very existence owed itself to the opposition to slavery. Republicans have been partisans of themes like law and order, rugged individualism, entrepreneurship, free trade, small government, and low taxes. #velshi
