The American Civil War claimed more lives than any conflict in U.S. history, accounting for more American military deaths than World War 1, World War 2, the Korean War and the War in Afghanistan combined. #velshi

An estimated 620,000 soldiers were killed, requiring the creation of national cemeteries for the first time. By July 1862, just two years after the start of the Civil War, 14 National Cemeteries - Arlington among them - had been established. #velshi
3/11
They later became burial places for all U.S. servicemembers. Every year we celebrate Memorial Day in honor of the men and women who have died fighting for this country. United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick is buried at Arlington National Cemetery. #velshi
4/11
He served in the New Jersey Air National Guard before putting on a different uniform to defend our Nation’s Capitol. Officer Sicknick did not die while fighting enemies overseas. #velshi
5/11
He died on U.S. soil, after being attacked by a mob of Trump supporting insurrectionists - motivated by the Big Lie - who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6th. There are still many questions surrounding the circumstances of Officer Sicknick’s death and the insurrection. #velshi
6/11
And, because 35 United States Senators voted against a commission to investigate those questions, it’s now possible that we may never get them answered. #velshi
7/11
These are those Senators. Take a good look at their faces. Members of the Capitol Police Force were beaten, stabbed, dragged, insulted, spat on, and killed on January 6th while protecting these 35 Senators, and everyone else who was on Capitol Hill that day. #velshi
8/11
I wonder if, as these 35 Republican Senators walk those halls where blood was spilled, they are able to look those officers in the eyes, knowing that they refused to do the absolute bare minimum for the brave patriots who saved their lives. #velshi

Law enforcement officers and members of our military take an oath when they enter into service of this country. #velshi
10/11
Senators also take an oath to: “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic” and to “faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which they are about to enter.” #velshi
11/11
This Memorial Day, take a moment to remember the millions of veterans, alive and dead, who followed their oath to care for our country. And try to square that with the fact that 35 Republican United States Senators were too cowardly to do the same. #velshi

In a small town just outside of Oslo, Norway sits Borregaard Manor. It’s a royal estate, originally built of stone and timber in the Middle Ages by King Olav Haraldsson. A peaceful place, where Norwegian Kings would spend their summers. #velshi

In 1993, it became the site where the most elusive peace in the world was almost achieved. During 14 meetings over a span of 8 months, Israeli officials and members of the Palestine Liberation Organization met under the veil of secrecy. #velshi

They sought to work out a deal that would try to end decades of misunderstanding, mistrust, and bloodshed between their people. It started out as an unofficial meeting between PLO officials and two Israeli professors. #velshi

It’s pretty obvious that as a U.S. politician, you probably shouldn’t insult the military. Military policy, maybe, but not the people who actually defend this country. It’s such an easy landmine to avoid. #velshi

Senator Ted Cruz recently retweeted a video which started out featuring a buff, bald Russian soldier with brute masculinity dripping off him like sweat. #velshi

The video is spliced with this bright animated ad that tells the story of why a female American soldier, raised by two mothers, chose to join the U.S. Army. #velshi

Democracy relies expressly on the ability to form an opinion and express it. Which is why what happened this week to the journalist @nhannahjones is so troubling. #velshi

Ms. Hannah-Jones is a friend of VELSHI, a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, a Peabody award winner and a genius in the literal sense; she was awarded the MacArthur Genius grant in 2017. #velshi

She was recently appointed to a prestigious role at the University of North Carolina’s respected journalism school. A role that’s been historically followed by the recipient being granted tenure at the University. #velshi
1/7 The first known group of Asian American and Pacific Islanders, the Filipinos, are known to have settled in Louisiana in 1763. That’s not a fact a lot of Americans know. Nor do a lot of non-Asian Americans know about Vincent Chin. #velshi
2/7 Vincent Chin was a 27-year-old Chinese American living in Detroit in the 80’s. Those of us who were around back then will remember the world dealing with the aftermath of a global oil crisis that drove gas prices up and made big American cars passe. #velshi
3/7 Ford, GM and Chrysler collapsed as Americans embraced smaller, more fuel-efficient Japanese cars like Nissans, Hondas and Toyotas. Tens of thousands of jobs were lost and some Americans blamed Japan. #velshi

Israel has a right to exist and to defend itself. That’s an indisputable fact. But so do Palestinians. And that's a fact that is often ignored. Palestinians are, at best, third class citizens in the nation of their birth. #velshi
2/16
The idea that it’s even remotely controversial to call what Israel has imposed on Palestinians a form of Apartheid is laughable. One look at a current map of Israel, Gaza and the Occupied Territories conjures up only one other example: Apartheid Era in South Africa. #velshi
3/16
The Israeli government, on an ongoing basis, declares parcels of land on which Palestinians live to be either of military or archeological importance, causing residents to be evicted. Sometimes there’s a court case, and almost always, the Palestinians lose. #velshi

“If you stand for nothing, what will you fall for?” is a famous line from Lin Manuel Miranda’s Broadway hit, “Hamilton” though Alexander Hamilton may not have said it that way, exactly, in real life. #velshi

It is the sentiment that without knowing who you are and what you believe in, you are doomed to be manipulated. And that is the situation in which today’s Republican Party finds itself. #velshi

Remember when the GOP was the Party of Lincoln? A party whose very existence owed itself to the opposition to slavery. Republicans have been partisans of themes like law and order, rugged individualism, entrepreneurship, free trade, small government, and low taxes. #velshi
