So what does SB 7 do? Lets list some of the things democrats think are controversial. It requires counties to scrub their voter rolls of dead people and folks who have moved and gives the SoS oversight to ensure they do it. #OnePersonOneVote
Requires an audit of voting systems to ensure accuracy.
It requires equipment in central counting area not have wifi capability. Both designed to help restore confidence in the system.
This bill specifies that anyone in line at the time the poll closes is entitled to vote, further ensuring and codifying voting rights.
SB7 specifies the rights of poll watchers, recourse if poll watchers are denied access or blocked from watching. It specifies watchers are entitled to watch ALL election activity. Transparency is always good public policy.
On the transparency side - this bill specifies that all communications between the county and their election vendors are public information, subject to disclosure. Again sunlight is the best disinfectant.
Counties with over 100K population must video record the ballots from the moment they arrive at central count until the time the precinct results are canvassed. This video will also be live streamed. For counties <100K this is optional. Who would oppose this transparency?
The bill strengthens the requirements for mail in ballots. Voters voting by mail will now have a voter ID requirement on par with voters voting in person. Voter ID is supported by both Republicans and Democrats. It's common sense.
The bill also created an online tracking for your mail in ballot so voters know when the application is received, ballot mailed, ballot received, ballot accepted or rejected, and counted. Voters can have peace of mind about their ballot.
Here is a real controversial one - SB7 requires the signature on an application for ballot by mail must be an ink signature - no photocopies. Democrats actually opposed this on the floor!
We saw massive abuse of drive by voting last year - this bill puts the same standard for drive in voting as the ballot both - only signed assistants can be with the voter when casting their ballot in the booth and now the car. Eliminate intimidation.
This bill requires employers to give their employees time to go vote if the polls are not open more than 2 hours outside their work hours. -- SB7 expands access to voting.
This bill prohibits all paid ballot harvesting activities. Ballot harvesting has been demonstrated to be a problem all across Texas, It's time to put an end to it. #OnePersonOneVote
It creates a civil remedy against those who harvest ballots. This allows those harmed by illegal ballot harvesting to recoup their losses resulting from these illegal activities.
SB7 requires local governments and SoS to post a lot of information about each upcoming election, including everything on the ballot, contact information for each candidate including email and phone, what the propositions on the ballot are, etc Informed voters are the best voters
SB 7 is a significant step in the right direction for Texas towards election integrity. I'm happy to vote for it. #txlege#SB7
