I have seen and received many messages of support this weekend. I appreciate them all. 🧡I have also heard many people say terrible things to rationalize the death of these children. I have also heard many people express distress & shock at the news. 1/14
I hope your distress motivates you to learn more. You should be distressed. But if you’ve been listening you shouldn’t be shocked. I have seen people this weekend call for inquiries and Royal commissions and reports. We’ve done that. It’s time for people to listen & learn. 2/14
I appreciate people attending vigils and keeping lights on and the discomfort of not knowing what to do. But use that discomfort you feel to find out what your next action is. Places you can start follow next... 3/14
RCAP (1996). This one is for people calling for a Royal Commission report.
If you want to look directly to the Calls to Action, here you go. Find the ones that apply to you. Volunteer with your kid’s school? Look at education. Involved in local rec leagues? Look at sport. 7/14
Want to know more about international Indigenous rights? Look here. And look at who the only 4 countries were who voted against adopting it during the UN general assembly vote... 8/14
If you want to understand the history of how residential schools and Indian hospitals played a part in Indigenous Health, give something like Medicine Unbundled a read.

And then, another report of how anti-Indigenous racism persists today. 12/14
I recently asked Twitter for Indigenous podcast recommendations. If reading isn’t your thing, you can learn a lot by listening. Follow these people. 13/14
We did the inquiries & have the reports. If you want to act then read and listen to what is there. It’s all there. I thank you for your compassion. But please don’t tell me how shocked you are. I want you to tell me how motivated you are to act and what you do next. Maarsii 14/14

Someone messaged me with a better resource than Medicine Unbundled, which was written by a settler and can be exploitative. Thank you for the message 🙏🏽. To look to Indigenous voices instead go to the Aboriginal Healing Foundation:
Holiday Monday. Just took a deep dive (hours) into all 52 pages of the draft K-6 social studies curriculum. 137 PDF sticky notes later I have some thoughts. The highlights; a thread. 1/10
The curriculum is deeply ideological. Religion aside (let’s save that for another thread), it is staunchly capitalist. Brief mention of collectivism of various Indigenous societies. Mentions societies “developing” not extracting natural resources 2/10
The curriculum is deeply racist, in many ways. One of the most noticeable? The continual reference to Indigenous people in the past tense. “HAD different languages” “HAD traditions and protocol for gifting” “LIVED in these areas” um, hi! Still here, alive and thriving, thx 3/10
