So, riding my bike, I realized something I had wrong. I’ve often said that there were 3 things that told me where this libertarian wingnuttery that then grew into the Freedumb caucus came from; the successful acts of political demand that gave crackpots a taste of 1/5
what was possible.
The ones I often cited were:
- Defeating the ERA
- Repealing Helmet Laws
- First Tea Party victories in Congress
But there was another tell I’ve missed. The one that told me that these misanthropes were determined to overturn any law they felt 2/5
was just too “nanny state” for their liking.
What was it? The attack on noise ordinances that starting in the 70s, where wingnuts successfully campaigned for the right to annoy the fuck out of people on the street by removing their mufflers, and blasting their 3/5
radios as loud as possible. It was the opening round of what I call now the “unhinged, anti-government, pro selfishness era” that helped get us here.
Rush Limbaugh saw the political value of all of these things and their effort on the “reprogrammable meat puppet” 4/5
set, so he hammered on all of them relentlessly. And here we are. 5/5
And this is why you have to now endure assholes gliding past your window at 3am, blaring bad music from their vehicles at 150 decibels. Before many of you were born, that was strictly forbidden in most cities and towns across America.

@TheDemocrats@RonBrownstein We won’t get a Mulligan. Once they turn us into Turkey, Hungry, China, or Russia, where the rules are written so only those in power are ever elected, there is literally no way back from that, except revolt. Armed revolt.
Letting it go that far is simply fucking insane.
@TheDemocrats@RonBrownstein We are here because what was always unthinkable has become the thinkable. Why the fuck would anyone not expect it to only get worse from here? If we don’t take away this treasonous GOP’s ability to rig future elections in dozens of states, this democracy is over. Period.
I’ve said for years that we’re post electoral politics and it’s bizarre that we’re just allowing a clearly seditionist movement to flourish while we dither.
The author, @PerryBaconJr says “We have 4 huge problems. I don’t see solutions to any of them.”
@perrybaconjr Our system of government is now completely broken and it has no constitutional tools with which to fix itself. The founders left gaping holes for evil people to seize our process, and we are living under a mass delusion that a process can fix it. It cannot. But we must.
No matter you try to game-out where our society is heading, nor what assumptions you use, it’s hard to find room for optimism. We’ve have turned our civilization over to oligarchs—and their mass media—that will always be able to influence us. We have very few weapons.
And yet we still remained locked into this mindset that only “peaceful change” will serve our interests. How can anyone assume that, when almost all pivotal events influencing the evolution of our modern world were all violent events. It’s curious and suspicious to me.
I mean think about it. Is not what Republicans are now doing the same kind of bullying of the people that dictators and ruling classes have always done? But they have become such a cult, with such enormous media reach, that they make anti-democracy sound like democracy.
So, after getting a new phone, Black lady pulls up beside me in a shiny new F-150. She has gorgeous, natural eyelashes. I roll down window and say to my new friend Wanda, “Excuse me. I just love your eyes. May I ask a personal question?”
Wanda: “Sure, but lemme 1/5
guess first. Who do I look like a normal person and not some crazy fucking alien skeeze with brooms stuck to my eyelids and some cheap-ass lace on my head?”
Me: “Nailed it.”
Both: “LOLing.”
Me: “So what’s up with that look? I never begrudge someone’s fashion 2/5
choices, but I don’t get the appeal.”
Wanda: “No one does, darling. Let me tell you, I own a salon, I’ll never get it. I told one customer to GTFO cause I couldn’t do nuthin’ for her. Some bitches wanna be ugly I guess.”
I’ve been speaking to a lot of 20 somethings all week. 13 different convos from the gym, to volunteers, to Office Depot. Cnclusion? You people who swear this generation is so sharp must be defensive as parents because these kids are woefully uninformed, uncurious,
disinterested, and utterly lost in a social media morass of runaway mediocrity. You may have raised exceptions, or think you have, but this country is generating a LOT of hapless dopes.
But go ahead and say it’s just my generation crapping on the one before. Except that I crap on my own a a lot. It allowed this to happen. But it has happened, and denying it is a really bad idea. We need to fix it, not pretend it never happened. It happened. We’re dumb.
.@offerup Your user experience blows chunks and it’s your fault. You have 1000s of devices listed without THE MOST BASIC info such as “model number, size, etc.” If you just urged sellers to photograph the item name-plates, you’d quadruple your sales. #PreventableLameness
@offerup Our increasingly uneducated society can rarely think though the most basic things anymore. Even when it’s in their own interests. As a service provider, it’s your obligation to think for them if it helps them AND you. Everyone wins.
@offerup It is no exaggeration to say that I have wasted dozens of hours trying to contact users and get them to report things such as “model? Screen size? Storage? CPU?” And what makes it all the worse is you have zillions of listings that are months or YEARS out of date.
