THREAD

Friday evening, I welcomed #Shabbat with a lovely and inspiring online event hosted by @HarvardHillel.

Attendees ranged from a member of the Class of 1971 to the current undergraduate Hillel president, a rising junior. (1/5)
It was still daylight when the event ended. Checking email, I found a message from Harvard President Larry Bacow, on #antisemitism.

It included this worrying line: "In the past two weeks, Harvard Hillel has been vandalized twice." harvard.edu/president/news… (2/5)
Since this news hadn't come up during the online gathering, I tried locating more specific information over the weekend myself.

But apart from one reference in the Harvard Police public crime log to "vandalism to a banister outside" the building, I could find nothing. (3/5)
This morning has brought another email, this time from the rabbi who so beautifully led our gathering Friday evening.

Please read it. (4/5) screenshot #1 of the message from Rabbi Jonah Steinberg. Tex
For more about the open letter referenced in Rabbi Steinberg's message, please consult facebook.com/HarvardIsrael/….

#ShalomRav, yes.

And: #AmYisraelChai.

(5/5)
P.S. An update posted on the letter document indicates that "this letter will be published on Friday."

If you're a Harvard student/alum/faculty member, I hope that you'll read the letter and consider adding your signature. forms.gle/ghBv7aGTBAWSkh….

"If anything, this is a case of Jews seeking inclusion within Ethnic Studies. Their objection is rather that the draft curriculum erases Jews from the Ethnic Studies pantheon...." —@schraubd on a controversy of which I was heretofore blissfully unaware: dsadevil.blogspot.com/2019/08/on-cal….
@schraubd "That this is a call for inclusion, not exclusion, is even more important to stress in the Mizrahi Jewish case. Jews from places like Iraq, Morocco, Tunisia, and Egypt have every right to be included in an 'Arab American Studies' curriculum;"+
"that curriculum is as much theirs as it is anyone else's. The assumption that their objections come 'from the outside' is a form of antisemitic otherization, nothing more." (link, again: dsadevil.blogspot.com/2019/08/on-cal…)
