Most packaged food you find in your grocery store contain them
They've been marketed as a "healthy" low-fat option to protect you from heart attacks
but more and more people are waking up to the scam
THREAD
Now, this is a question I get from many of you all the time:
"What are seed oils?"
Here is the list of the most commonly used ones:
Corn
Canola
Cottonseed
Soybean
Safflower
Peanut
They're made up of a specific type of fat known as Polyunsaturated Fatty acids
There are two types of fats found in nature
Saturated Fats
Unsaturated Fats
The difference (without boring you too much about the chemistry) is that saturated fats are solid at room temperature
while unsaturated fats (seed oils) are liquid at room temperature
Unsaturated fats are very unstable molecules
& go rancid very easily
Most commonly used seed oils are extremely inflammatory because of this
Inflammation = your silent killer
That's something you want to avoid if you want to live a long & healthy life
Seed oils, better known as vegetable oils, appeared at the turn of the 20th century
Prior to that, animal fats were used in all of our cooking
Lard from pigs
Butter from Cows
Tallow from Beef
Suet from Lamb
Certain Asian cultures used coconut and palm oil
At the turn of the 20th century, seed oils began replacing these traditional animal fats
Why?
Because they were cheap as hell
They were initially used as an industrial lubricant in machinery
Yuck
It gets worse
They wanted to make these oils more solid
& make them look just like butter
Their scientist used Hydrogenation, an industrial chemical process in order to make it happen
Hydrogenation of seed oils includes high pressure & heat
That oxidizes the oil and makes it even more
rancid
They add chemical solvents like Hexane & bleach
Finally, they "enhance" the seed oils with artificial colors so it looks like butter
aka toxic chemical slop
That's how Crisco & Margarine were born
These seed oil-based product infiltrated the entire food industry
Everyone kitchen in America began using them
They wanted you to believe it was the healthiest option
and best of all
It was way cheaper than butter or other animal fats
Soon after, the war against animal saturated fats began
In the 60s
Ancel Keys used research to convince the masses of the danger of saturated fat and heart disease
The American Heart Association came into being around this time as well
Together, Ancel Keys and the American Heart Association pushed out propaganda against saturated fats
They created fear on how saturated fats caused high cholesterol
which meant a greater risk of heart attacks
Seed oils were the Heart-healthy solution everyone needed
What most of you don't know is that Procter and Gamble
The same company that owned Crisco
was very closely related to the American Heart Association & even funded them
Conflict of interest much??
It took decades before people started catching on to the scam they were sold
As more research came out, seed oils seemed less and less like the health saviors they were thought to be
Side effects of seed oils were increases in:
Gallstones
Cancer
Stroke
Damaged liver
They are also very high in Omega 6, a polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA)
All of you have something called an Omega3 to Omega 6 ratio
Omega 3 is an anti-inflammatory form of PUFA
Omega 6 is pro-inflammatory and is found in most packaged foods
The average American consumes 20x more Omega 6 than Omega 3
That's a disaster for global health
So now, you might be wondering:
"If seed oils are everywhere, what should I do to protect myself?"
Answer is simple
Avoid them at all cost!
Most of your favorite restaurants use them to cook their food so that makes its very hard to completely avoid
but do your best
There are some seed oils that are exceptions
Any seed oil that is cold-pressed is less likely to go rancid
For example, Olive oil is a seed oil that is very healthy for you
Here are some great ways to minimize the damage of Industrialized seed oils have on your body:
- Eat lots of wild-caught seafood 1-2x per week
- Eat organic and grassfed meat
- Use black seed oil (cold pressed) which contains thymoquinone, a potent anti-inflammatory)
