in March 2015, months before the Russians stepped in to defend Assad against al-Jolani & Caliph Baghdadi, Brennan explained that the US did not want to see a collapse of the Syrian regime as it could open the way to Islamist extremists taking power.

The CIA chief said he had reason to worry about who might replace President Assad if his gov. fell, given the rise of the Islamic State group and other jihadists in Syria.

Ironically, according to US policy makers, the US has achieved its "least bad option" in Syria.
Both the opposition & Assad have been dramatically weakened. They pose little threat to the West or anyone save the poor Syrian people, who are the losers in this "least bad option."

What the US did in Syria was settle for a number of "least bad options" after failing to put pro-US proxies in power.
They kept Assad in Damascus, Jolani weakened the North, the YPG in NE, & Syria in ruins.
Today Syria cannot threaten America's allies.
