How does a middle office risk management job differ from a risk management job on the trading floor?
@garp @PRMIA @actuarynews @SOActuaries @irmglobal
TMO - Treasury Middle Office roles differ from bank to bank.
In other non-banking financial institutions, MO roles may vary according to portfolio size and responsibilities handed over to the risk management team.
MO is primarily responsible for overseeing trading (front office) activities and applying controls, and reporting violations thereof.
Some MO roles may also envisage giving the risk managers the right to execute stop-loss transactions and apply hedging techniques using financial derivatives to reduce or transfer financial risks.
But usually large commercial /retail banks have middle offices to control inter-bank currency and money market / fixed income activities conducted by desk dealers on the trading floor aka treasury department.
In addition to this MO Managers, and their team may also oversee trading books risks which include market risk, liquidity risks, credit risk in the trading portfolio, and valuation /revaluation risks which might affect profitability - KPIs.
At some big banks, MO also prepares BASEL II /III Compliance Reports and compute capital adequacy charges concerning the Treasury Departments Exposures.
Summarizing =>
•The MO acts as an intermediary Monitoring Post between the FO and the BO. The Middle office only identifies, measures and manages and monitors in real-time the risk of trading book transactions and the other treasury portfolio exposures that fall
within its control and risk assessment mandate. The #MO might also give its input on ALRM - Asset Liability Risk Management to the #ALCO - Asset Liability Committee or the BRMC - Board Risk Management Committee.
•The Front Office is the risk-taker, conducting arbitrage operations and transactions across markets and time zones.

The trading desk is the FO.
•Whereas the Back Office is the operations’ controller in regard to Materiality Misstatement Risk, out of the many responsibilities, some of which are done as part of the banking convention, usually includes daily P&L Accounts revaluation marking, position sizing
and limit utilization reports, limit breach reports, blotter reconciliation reports, exceptions reports, and transaction GLA Posting, deal ticker issuance, deal stamp monitoring, deal voice recording and other bookkeeping related documentation filing and archiving procedures.
•However, certain responsibilities may vary and overlap with that of the MO from bank to bank.
Capital Market Division/s which buy and sell listed and unlisted corporate bonds, and listed equities aka common shares issued by companies, might have a middle office desk of their own.
•FRONT OFFICE RISK MANAGEMENT is a different concept.

•FO RISK MGMT. is done sitting next to a dealer’s desk on the trading floor/dealing room. It is for controlling risks emanating from high-risk dealing operations and/or other trading book investments.
It is usually done at Pension Funds, Quantitative Funds, Investment Banks, Hedge Funds and other large asset management companies which manage high-risk transactions and are constantly hedging credit, market, liquidity and operational risks in a dynamic environment, in real-time.
#ALGO Trading and #HFT Global #Arbitrageurs might have a business model which would require dynamic hedging and highly responsive risk trading systems and controls, which can be best done by placing the risk controller right next to the dealer or the Chief Investment Officer.

How did getting a #PhD harmed your career?
This question was put to me on another forum.
I am sharing my answer for the benefit of this community.
Interesting to read such pessimistic accounts of life again and again! I think if the word goes out, most of the universities will be facing a shortage of students and hence that leads to a lockdown / shut down or a possible global academic research meltdown.
So let us not overdo this criticism!

I would like to answer this from a knowledge capital formation and a global development perspective, based on my interaction with PhD degree holders across various nations of the world.

Just analyzing some postgraduate degrees offered by the universities across #Newzealand.
The fees are way above the global market rate, and, it appears, they overcharge students for extending their stay, which is akin to obtaining a legit work permit.
Education is big business!
Secondly, what is the guarantee that an international student will get a like-minded job, at a place of his choosing?
A work permit does not translate into a fantastic professional career!!
A basic three-year work permit, might not be enough to earn well after investing so much
I always say to my students, who would like to go overseas, that the grass appears greener on the other side.
Your imagination and perception might force you to acquire the wrong beliefs about foreign education.
A degree is a piece of paper! that's all.
What matters is your luck

Is CFA better than PhD in Finance?
How can you compare a doctoral research program with a professional qualification awarded by a professional body?

CFA is an entry pass/ticket.
People with no background in Finance, Accounting and Economics, are asked to do a CFA to prove and improve their skill sets across the Capital Markets, Investment Banking, Financial Brokerage and Asset Management Sectors.
My friend who is a PhD is running a CFA / Financial Training Institute.

All those who pass out after level III, refer to the PhD as “SIR”.

Got my point?

So no comparison!

I was listening to a witty politician on the TV!
I guess that's more than enough to detest economics as a subject when you find that some sinister fellow uses statistics to fool the masses.
Also, #Macroeconomic Indicators are the most fungible indicators that can be manipulated.
Gosh, people are writing so much on the forms of economic recovery that we might see in the foreseeable future!
Will productivity lead to employment gains?
That is one question not being asked.
Many people have become jobless due to the pandemic and its negative outcomes.
Because, once a white-collar person loses his job, then it becomes so difficult to regain a foothold in the labour market.
Blue-collar workers and zero contract hour workers are in a different leg of the job market.

Is it permissible to take a conventional style loan to finance/fund a #Shariah Compliant Commercial Project?
A loan is not permissible in the traditional banking operational jargon or sense!
The Credit application should have an underlying asset trade funding request inbuilt and/or an explicit tangible commercial intent stating the same, embedded in the actual financing/investment contract.
Any transaction which provides money without a trading justification will not work.
In Islamic Finance, debt-refinancing and NPA - Non-performing Asset rollovers are not allowed.

How good is the #Oxford Masters (MSc.) in Law and Finance program?
Pairing Finance with the law or Legal studies is not a bad combination.
But, you need to develop a road map for your career.
Whether you would like to start off as a #paralegal or as a financial / management accounting or a compliance analyst in the financial services sector of the economy in the long run?!
Because such degrees make you neither fish nor foul.
This is strictly my opinion and you may disagree.
Oxford Universities Degree/s, are second to none.
