Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: I would like to remind ABs that it is critically important to disclose COVID-19 symptoms when seeking healthcare so health teams can enact safety protocols. This will help you get the care you need & keep everyone safe. (1/9)
We have administered 3.1M+ doses of COVID-19 vaccine. 67% of ABs 12+ have at least 1 dose & 15% are fully vaccinated with 2. Over the last 24hrs we ID’d 139 new cases & completed about 3.4K tests. Our positivity rate is 4.2%. We ID’d 74 additional VoCs in the last 24hrs. (2/9)
There are active alerts/outbreaks in 241 schools. Last week, AB’s R value was 0.74. There are 4.4K active cases– 20K fewer than 1 month ago. Our + rate has averaged 4.5% over the last 7 days - a sharp drop from 11.7% in early May. Rapid progress is being made across AB. (3/9)
There are 336 ppl in hospital, incl 85 in ICU. Sadly, 3 new deaths were reported in the last 24hrs, all between the ages of 48 & 68. My thoughts are w/ their family & friends as they mourn. I also extend my sympathies to anyone who lost a loved one recently from any cause. (4/9)
We’ve ID’d 193 B.1.617.2 cases since Apr 8, mostly substrain B.1.617.2. AHS had ID’d 20 cases of B.1.617.2 on 2 units at Foothills Medical Centre. All but the index case are hospital-acquired. Strict protocols were implemented & FMC remains open & safe for ppl needing care (5/9)
Of VoCs ID’d last week, only 5% were B.1.617. We have 1 of the most aggressive VoC testing strategies in Canada – screening 100% of + non-b.1.17 cases for VoCs. (6/9)
These are called 2X to help contact tracers aggressively contain the virus. While any new variant is a concern, we can work together to stop transmission. (7/9)
ABs can help by getting vaccinated – if you haven’t got your 1st dose, this is the time to do it. And if you’re eligible for a 2nd, book it now. The quicker we can do this, the safer we will all be. We’ve come far & are seeing real progress. (8/9)
We all need to keep limiting the risk of transmission. Wear a mask, stay distanced, avoid groups indoors & don’t go out if feeling even a little sick. If we all do our part, we can continue to keep cases decreasing & keep everyone healthier in the weeks & months ahead. (9/9)

Vaccines are safe & our best defense against COVID. If you haven’t received your 1st dose yet book an appt w/AHS or a participating pharmacy. Or, visit an AHS walk-in clinic. albertahealthservices.ca/topics/Page172… (3/5)
I would like to address concerns about the Foothill Medical Centre outbreak & vaccinated individuals testing positive for COVID-19. COVID vaccines provide excellent protection & dramatically reduce the risk of severe outcomes, but they do not make us invincible. (1/6)
Even after immunization, it is rare but possible to contract COVID-19. Thanks to vaccines, even then you are less likely to experience severe illness, hospitalization & death. While no vaccine is guaranteed to prevent 100% of any illness, these vaccines are very protective. (2/6)
It appears that all but one case is hospital-acquired, so cases were in hospital for other reasons before their infections. I’m glad to see 1 of the 2 units came off outbreak on Wednesday. (3/6)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: I will be away next week. My live updates will be postponed until June 22. Deputy CMOH Dr. Andre Corriveau & our health team will keep you informed w/ online updates. Online data will continue to be posted daily. (1/8)

Sadly, 6 new deaths were reported in the last 24hrs, a reminder that we continue to see the impacts of the 3rd wave. My thoughts are with the family, friends, neighbours & communities of these individuals as they mourn their loved ones. (3/8)

This pandemic has been difficult, especially for children & youth. Vaccines are our opportunity to get back to the activities that are important to our families. Today, I have sent a letter to parents & guardians of K-12 students about the importance & safety of vaccines. (3/5)
I want to talk briefly about a point I made yesterday in my media availability, as I feel it’s an important one. (1/6)
The goal of our response has always been to balance the health risks from COVID-19 with the impacts of the restrictions designed to stop its spread. (2/6)
With cases declining and vaccinations rising, we all must get ready to face a new challenge: Learning to live safely as restrictions ease and life starts to feel closer to normal. (3/6)
Here is a summary of today’s #COVID19AB update: Thank you to everyone who made safe choices & followed the rules over the long weekend, incl the 16K+ ppl who were tested & the 86K+ ppl who were vaccinated. (1/7)
AHS reported a 4% no-show rate over the last 3 days. This is not resulting in wastage but takes an appt from someone who wants it & slows down our ability to vaccinate ABs as quickly as possible. If you make an appt, please keep it or cancel it. It helps everyone out. (2/7)
Over the last 24hrs, we ID’d 387 new cases & completed about 4K tests. Our + rate is 9.9%. There are 565 ppl in hospital, incl 158 in ICU. Sadly, 9 new deaths in ppl aged 42 to 84 were reported in the last 24hrs. My sympathies go to their families, friends & communities. (3/7)
