So why pediatric surgery? Pediatric Surgery in India is a last choice super-speciality for surgeons. Low money. Long hours. Complex cases. Seeing kids die. All are often cited reasons. Thread. 1/n
I worked in a minimal access surgery unit and a GI Surgery unit post general surgery. GI surgery was something I liked. But more I read about child surgery - felt an irresistible pull. 2/n
Ended up starting a reasonably successful surgical education platform @Surgtest_NEETSS with @Gopi31676594 . We did pretty well. Scored a decent rank in GI Surgery in 2020. 3/n
In India , GI Surgery & Onco Surgery are the specialties which surgeons die for. They are great, glamorous and there is huge demand. Unlike what public thinks heart and brain surgeons come a little behind. 4/n
The decision to leave GI Surgery was hotly condemned. It was the dream branch. I got a great rank in pediatric Surgery too. Didn't take either of them. Decided to concentrate on teaching students at surgtest.com and making it big. There was also a decent practice 4/n.
I still badly wanted to be a pediatric surgeon. I always believed that children were the most vulnerable of all beings and there was a strong pull. 2021 - I get a great rank in Pediatric Surgery and @Gopi31676594 gets into GI Surgery. We both choose Jaipur. 6/n
Why Jaipur ? Incredible neonatal surgical load and amazing hands on experience. Do I love it ? Absolutely. Is the work good ? Definitely. Yes there are stressful times. But seeing a child recover is something that can't be measured. 7/n
Pediatric Surgery is satisfying, hectic and extremely rewarding. I work with neonates and a few small hoomans. I love them and they love me back too (sometimes). #SoME4surgery@me4_so#Pediatricsurgery 8/n
Is it difficult seeing kids die ? No it's not. Atleast for me. I act cool at work. But it does burn you a bit. You go all retrospective all the time .This should be a separate thread but we do have a few helping hands. @RajaniSurendarB lent a helping hand once. 9/n
Someday I hope I can help other young surgeons and physicians too. Meanwhile I believe pediatric surgery is a field that deserves more smart people coming in. The children deserve the best. End of thread
Actually a correction. It's difficult seeing kids die. Atleast for me. Typing fast and you forget what you typed a few words before.

I have spent 12 years of my life working to acquire degrees & treating. I am doing an Mch in pediatric Surgery. It's 45 degrees out here in Jaipur. On an average I work 12 to 16 hrs a day. There are bed bugs on the duty room and AC doesn't work. I wonder was it all worth ?
It all seemed worth it till I saw the docs being beaten. I still love my job. Pediatric Surgery is extremely satisfying. But the threat of violence in public hospitals is real and the fear we face each time a child becomes sick is real. I intended to highlight that.
I don't intend to quit or leave the profession. But the fact is we will stop attracting the best until we can ensure better working conditions and safety for doctors
