We recently undertook an FOI to the Home Office asking about the EUSS Paper Application route. Below, and overview of our findings, incl. outcomes of apps, nationalities of those applying and age + gender breakdown 👇🧵1/10
Gender: 59% of applicants via the paper route were women 👇 meaning women are disproportionately impacted by refusals under this route. 2/10
Nationalities: Over 177 different nationalities in total represented in our dataset w/ the top 10 👇 most numerous representing 50% of all the paper apps to date (Feb 21) 3/10
While the majority of apps have been from non-EU nationals (above), EU nats represent 17% of apps via this route to date (Feb'21). Community advice agencies tell us this is increasing📈as we move closer to the deadline with those who do not have ID now accessing this route. 4/10
Through our FOI we were able to access a much more detailed age breakdown for paper apps- its is broadly very similar to the age range of the main application route. 5/10
Outcomes: Refusals are at 20% via this route- much higher than 2% via the main application route. This goes as high as 63% for Zambrano carers (see note below on this group) 6/10
Two important updates for paper applications this week (also covered in the blog). 🔽🔽 8/10
1) On 09th June the UK's High Court ruled the exclusion of Zambrano carers from the EUSS if they have leave under another UK Immigration route was unlawful- read more about this here from @freemovementlaw 9/10 freemovement.org.uk/high-court-fin…
2) Also on 09th June, it was revealed that paper applications could now be requested and submitted via email- just 15 working days before the deadline. Read more here, again from the wonderful people at @freemovementlaw 10/10 freemovement.org.uk/you-can-now-ge…

Snapshot of issues from #EUSS drop-in yesterday in Gt. Yarmouth👇. Week 2/5 final drop-ins before deadline ⏰. General: the gov.uk site was down, letters from DWP + UC updates causing panic and distress and delays continue 🧵1/8
The site was down meaning case workers could not help some clients to make their application. This will cause delays and made people who will need to rely on the digital status in the future anxious about its reliability. 2/8
Some clients have received letters from DWP asking about their status or need to update their UC journal about their status. This was causing panic and distress for some, v.worried their benefits might stop esp. for those who have submitted apps but are waiting decisions 3/8
