Filipino comic book writer, artist and self-taught animator #ArnoldArre started a revolution when he published his graphic novel #TheMythologyClass in 1999, originally as four separate issues.
“Why promote us? Why promote Filipino culture? I’m sure — there are a lot of you here — some of you are probably, you know, storytellers, artists, writers. I’m sure you are influenced by American books or European comics or even Japanese manga.”
“And that’s okay. That’s fine. That’s great. I was influenced by Japanese anime. The point I’m trying to make is that it wouldn’t hurt to promote us, to promote our culture. To tell stories about us, you know.”
“Our stories. Our characters. Our history. Because we have such a rich culture and, you know, there’s still so many stories to tell and there are just very few of us, so we need help.”
“Because not only will you be uplifting our image for the entire world, but, you know, you will be shaping, even creating an identity for us. And that’s a nice thing. That’s a great thing. That’s very, very important.”
She’s the Darna we never got, but I would say Filipino American actress @lizasoberano getting to showcase her talent as a voice actress to a global audience has made up for that.
The painstaking detail with which it reproduced the city of Manila on screen. The seamless way it wove the creatures of Philippine myth into modern society.
Is there anyone who doesn’t have a @netflix subscription?
#Netflix is still the streaming platform I consider a must-have. Some pundits were saying back then that Netflix was toast because content providers were pulling out their titles to set up their own streaming services.
But @netflix proved the doomsayers wrong by focusing on developing original content.
It’s become the platform for content creators who never thought they could bring their vision to life. We keep hearing this time and again, whether in South Korea, India, or other countries.
As for my No. 2 streaming platform, it’s @disneyplus. I’ve been a @Marvel fanboy since I was a kid, so the #MCU is the killer app for #DisneyPlus for me.
