As Lukashenko cracks down, Lithuania steps up to help the Belarusian opposition — and finds itself the target of new hybrid measures

This includes “irregular migration” — aka Belarus state-backed human trafficking into Europe

“Lukashenko must think this is the way Europe will stop putting pressure on his murderous regime or helping the opposition,” Lithuanian FM @GLandsbergis tells @RenewGreatPower. “Yes, we might need assistance… that won’t make us back down from defending the right course.” /2
Over the past few weeks, hundreds of migrants, primarily from Iraq, have crossed the border from Belarus into Lithuania. Lithuania’s government says this is a targeted campaign against Lithuania using state-backed human trafficking schemes sponsored by Belarusian authorities. /3
Lithuania played an active leadership role organizing the response to Lukashenko’s latest aggression — the hijacking of a passenger flight in order to arrest Belarusian activist/journalist Roman Protasevich.

The weaponized migration seems to be retaliation for their efforts./4
Iraqis & some Syrians arrive in Minsk on flights from Istanbul/Baghdad. Some flights are operated by a company allegedly controlled by Lukashenko. Migrants receive visas & wait in Minsk until they are aided across the border to Lithuania by the Belarusian border guard. /5
Lithuania’s border guards have released video showing their Belarusian counterparts erasing the footprints of the migrants at the crossing points. /6
In the manipulation of migrant flows, Lukashenko can draw on examples from Moscow.

In 2015, Russian bombing campaigns in Syria heavily targeted civilian areas, driving a flood of refugees into Europe. This weaponized migration fueled a political crisis within the EU. /7
Russia also helped facilitate the movement of Islamic fighters into Syria and Iraq, and it has facilitated routes for migrants from Africa and elsewhere to Europe across Russia. /8
Belarus has sharpened & adapted this Russian tactic of weaponized migration, facilitating human trafficking through Belarus to use weaponized migrant flows to exact a political and security price from Lithuania, which offers significant support to the Belarusian opposition. /9
“It is obvious that a hybrid war is being waged against Lithuania, and illegal migration flows are one of the means,” says Lithuania’s Interior Minister. /10
Lithuania is absorbing a lot of the heat from Minsk, and they deserve more support from the US and others as they do so.

My sister somehow convinced my father, who has spent the last 14 months isolated with not a single person under the age of 60, to take my niece and nephew to Dave & Buster’s.

Alone. By himself. Into the 4th ring of hell.
So now, in retaliation, my father has told the kids that they really really want to watch JAWS tonight — “it’s an excellent summer movie, I’ll tell you what.” 🦈 🎥
Ok so we are actually watching with Jaws with the kids

There is a pleasing amount of screaming

I am very glad I get to sleep in a different house tonight

Does anyone know what these critters are? This one is small but have seen up to 1/2” long. Actual color is very wine/purple with yellow-green spots on sides of creepy wiggly body. It waves its front whiskers around like it wants to get in your ear and eat your brain. Tiny aliens.
Guys it’s not an earwig, which has butt forceps. This thing is purple and has face wavers.

Close to this 👇 from images, but not as horned looking
Ok seems like some kind of lacewing larvae, probably brown lacewings — and good news they eat aphids and not brains.

So alien looking tho yuck

Lunch break garden walk:

Currently obsessed with the tiny adorable curlycues in the dandelion greens blossoms
This lucky garden spider has a great spot in the center of the crepe myrtle which occasionally gets this ethereal lighting
Well helloooooo red amaranth growing in the corn! (Wild seeds from last year, but my rule is if it grows, it stays)

They both grow tall. They can be friends.

“This is not the same country I fought for,” says Lt Col (ret) Barnard Kemter after the organizers of an Ohio Memorial Day event turned off his mic when they didn’t like his speech, which discussed the role of freed slaves in the origins of Memorial Day /1
beaconjournal.com/story/news/202…
Take the time listen to Kemter’s full speech, which is full of many relevant history lessons on union and sacrifice and what that sacrifice was all meant to buy.

Imagine being so far gone in partisan madness as to censor this speech about our nation /2

This story is now getting national attention. Hudson, Ohio was one of my hometowns. Its history, which Kemter refers to in his speech, is proudly rooted in the abolition movement.

It did not used to be a place of madness. /3

If you want to imagine how bad & stupid things would have been in a 2nd Trump term—how accelerated the downward spiral of American relevancy could be—feast your eyes upon the marvels of the Arizona ballot recount, where conjurers may as well be dousing for demons in the ballots.
Looking for “bamboo” in the ballots to prove they are somehow smuggled forgeries from China to help democrats — not at all a totally made-up thing leveraging some lazy ideas about Asia (oh wait yes it totally is)
Using UV lights to disprove a negative — not at all a waste of time and money (there shouldn’t be watermarks, so we will look to be sure there are no watermarks, even though the idea there might be some is bananas-crazy-cuckoo-pants) — oh wait, i totally a waste of time and money

I normally hate the State of the Union (or whatever). Dribs and drabs of partisan clap points that I eyeroll through to get to one or two lines on foreign policy.

But — but — Joe Biden is here outlining a moonshot to drag American governance & society into the 21st century. /1
I know a lot of people won’t see it that way. You can hear the painful and somewhat blind GOP “woke socialism” response that is coming.

They would do better to leave Boebert and Cruz out of the frontline, and come to the table and engage on these proposals. /2
This is a transformative vision to invest in a more competitive American economy connected to a more competitive American workforce that defines more support from the government to enhance their chances of success. And their kids’ success. Also it says how to pay for it. /3
