This shitshow like all the previous shitshows was so completely avoidable.
I recorded this on Fri with the excellent Columbia Journalism Review. Its editor @kylepope got in touch to ask what on earth going on with UK media. So bizarre to explain what’s going on to someone watching from outside. The madness of ‘Freedom Day’ as the virus mutates & surges
The inability of press or opposition to hold govt to account is literally killing us. I explained to @cjr how that frustration led me to @allthecitizens & our work with @IndependentSage & @FBoversight & lawyers like @A__W______O & @Foxglovelegal.
We’ve only just started talking about this work but third newsletter is here with full interview with the brilliant @dgurdasani1 & the ongoing total scandal that is the govt’s refusal to publish the data on the spread of the variant in schools. Why not???

What’s extraordinary is that it’s Cambridge Analytica’s Nix that points out that in UK we require OPT-IN consent to share people’s data.

What’s even more wild to me is Dido Harding’s role in all this. She makes a passing appearance in this newsletter because of her previous role as chair of Genomics England (after previously heading up NHS Improvement).

But this is what #NHSDataGrab is all about: it’s data gold.

Good morning. Your government is suppressing evidence of the spread of the new variant in schools. This has been going on for weeks. We know it has this data. We know it is refusing to publish it. WHY??

The consequences of this suppression of data are potentially deadly. Schools are reservoirs of the unvaxxed. If the variant is spreading, this is where it's happening. That we're allowing govt to do this AGAIN is unforgiveable

Unions - inc @UNISONinSchools & @NEUnion - have been demanding data for weeks. Scientists @dgurdasani1 & @chrischirp have been jumping up & down. And still nothing.

@allthecitizens with help from @A__W______O sent legal letter on Fri.

I still can’t believe Public Health England did this. They held a press conference y’day trumpeting ‘good news’ with a 10.30pm embargo. And then dumped long overdue critical data showing devastating news about spread of variant at exactly same time on Sat night. Absolutely stinks
Here’s @chrischirp’s reaction. The headline is that this is an absolute emergency.

A total scandal that body in charge of our public health is playing cheap, shitty politics with our public health. I sincerely hope that PHE director @SMHopkins is asked some hard questions today
AND IT WORKED. Look at that headline. This is most definitely *not* the headline news today. The virus is now 50% of sequenced cases. SAGE warned this week that a third wave could be worst yet. The news is truly awful. But PHE has apparently played active role in covering it up
