An unexplored scenario for humanity is that as technology becomes more advanced, we become more adept at detecting aliens. But the aliens have no interest in our affairs, so we know of their existence but they never attempt to interact.
The prime directive envisioned in Star Trek may in fact exist and we just happen to be that backward civilization. It's just like how we treat tribes in the Amazon. We allow them to thrive in complete isolation.
Any advanced civilization will likely have a history where members of their race chose to live in isolation. So it should be no surprise that they would leave our civilization alone to grow up for ourselves.
Even in Carl Sagan's book Contact (and the movie), that is exactly what happens. Advanced aliens make contact, announce their presence and then let humanity live in isolation. This scenario is more likely than what people imagine.
So if there are already advanced civilizations that have reached earth, then it is more likely that they will never interact and engage with our civilization. We will know they exist but that would be the status quo for centuries.
Considering also the vastness of space-time, aliens that have reached us may be leveraging a yet to be discovered kind of physics. So when these objects move in an inexplicable manner, it's plausible that it's propelled using some unknown physics.
The notion that aliens might be like those found in Star Trek or Star Wars is likely wrong. They likely evolved beyond what we describe to be organic.
