Want a happy life?

CHANGE YOUR WAY OF THINKING:

A 20-tweet Stoic handbook ๐Ÿ‘‡

[Graphics: @itspooran]
Gratitude

โŒ I have nothing to be grateful for

โœ… I am grateful I woke up today

- Gratitude for just being alive

- Gratitude for breathing in and out

- Some days that's enough, maybe it's enough every day
Comparison

โŒ My friend is achieving more than me

โœ… Life is not a competition

- You're on your path, they're on theirs

- Don't get pulled away from your mission for the sake of someone else's
Time

โŒ I'm bored, I wish the clock would move faster

โœ… I value every moment I have

- Seize and savour the passing moments

- Some go slow and some go fast

- But once they pass, they're gone
Death

โŒ I have time, I'll live for years

โœ… I could die tomorrow

- Focus on the important things

- Be present with friends & family

- Don't waste time on frivolous bullsh*t
Comfort

โŒ If I stay in my comfort zone, difficulty won't find me

โœ… If I expand my comfort zone, I will find difficulty and beat it

- Turning discomfort into comfort is a superpower

- Short term, facing discomfort gives purpose

- Long term, facing discomfort conquers fears
Doing Good

โŒ If I do a favour, I expect one back

โœ… I do good deeds for their own sake

- Do favours

- Do help

- Do give

- Don't keep score
Entertainment

โŒ TV, news, arguing on social media

โœ… Books, podcasts, learning on social media

- Most news is here today, gone tomorrow

- It is created to provoke a reaction (& therefore upset your tranquility)

- Be intentional with your consumption
Attachment

โŒ I fear losing everything I have

โœ… I appreciate what I have but accept it is on loan from the universe

- Attachment creates tension

- Freedom comes with the dropping of attachment

- "Without this thing, I can't be happy" is a false belief
Criticism

โŒ I'm useless if I get criticized

โœ… Criticism is just another opinion, their words don't touch me

- Examine criticism

- If itโ€™s constructive, use it to improve

- If not, laugh at it
Praise

โŒ I'm useless if I don't receive praise

โœ… I do my best work regardless of how it is received

- Praise is just an added judgement

- It has no bearing on your true worth

- The important thing is self-worth
Adversity

โŒ I can't cope with difficulty

โœ… I seek the value in whatever happens

- We can't choose when adversity strikes

- But we can choose how we react to it

- We are often capable of more than we think
Opinion

โŒ People always need to hear my take

โœ… Not everything requires my opinion

- No need to rush to judgement

- No need to always offer the judgement when it has been formed
Judgement

โŒ My friend let me down, they upset me

โœ… If I am upset, the upset is in me - therefore I have the power to remove it

- We are not disturbed by events, people, things

- We are only disturbed by the views we take of them
Emotion

โŒ Negative emotions are a weakness

โœ… Negative emotions can be used as a signal to change something

- Feeling instinctive emotions is inevitable

- Allowing them to result in negative actions is optional

- Stop, examine, find the root cause of the emotion
Failure

โŒ Ugh, I failed - just my luck

โœ… No, not just my luck โ€“ just EVERYONEโ€™S luck. Just Fate.

- Cursing our luck changes nothing

- If we learn, failure can lead to self improvement & increased resilience

- We're "lucky" that we have the strength within us to keep going
Fear

โŒ I'm scared to try, the outcome will be bad

โœ… I need to understand what I'm afraid of and prepare as best I can

- Curiosity โ€“ What am I afraid of?

- Understanding โ€“ Is the fear justified? How could I recover from the worst outcome?

- Action โ€“ Take the first step
Regret

โŒ This thing happened, and it is terrible!

โœ… This thing happened, what can I do about it

- Constantly test your mental impressions

- Removing emotional language can take the sting out of persistent worries
Discipline

โŒ Discipline ruins my freedom

โœ… Discipline now means freedom later

- Discipline in diet makes you healthier

- Discipline in exercise makes you stronger

- Discipline in work makes you reliable

- Discipline opens up space for so much in life
Control

โŒ I wish I could control more

โœ… I'm lucky I only control my own actions, otherwise my responsibilities would be endless

- You control your opinion, intention, desire/aversion

- In other words, whatever is your own doing

- Focus on this, accept the rest
Practice

โŒ I can't change my thinking, it's not that easy

โœ… It will require effort to change my thinking, but it's worth it

- We're all "programmed" in certain ways

- It takes effort to reprogram

- How long are you going to wait before you demand a happy life for yourself?

As part of the upcoming Stoicon-X Women event,

the organisers are inviting you to share your #PathsToFlourishing story.

The conference speakers have already shared their own stories, some of which are in the thread below

Thereโ€™s a cemetary next door to me.

Yes, my neighbours are quiet. I know that Iโ€™ll be just as quiet one day too.

Thatโ€™s not a morbid thought at all.

Muriel Spark said that โ€œthere is no other practice which so intensifies life.โ€

I flourish when I am inside of a book.

I flourish sitting among the 70 meter tall Douglas Fir trees that surround my home.

A long time ago I read Epictetusโ€™ Discourses among those trees and thought: โ€œThis is good stuff.โ€

If, as Epictetus said, most "entertainment"

only exploits people's weaknesses,

what are the Stoic alternatives?

Here are some ideas ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Walk

๐—š๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ผ๐˜‚๐˜๐—ฑ๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐˜€:

โ€œWe ought to take outdoor walks,

to refresh and raise our spirits by deep breathing in the open air.โ€

- Seneca, On Peace of Mind 17.8
2. Exercise

๐—š๐—ฒ๐˜ ๐—ฎ๐—ฐ๐˜๐—ถ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ:

โ€œIndulge the body just so far as suffices for good health.

It needs to be treated somewhat strictly to prevent it from being disobedient to the spirit."

I used to worry A LOT about:

- Past mistakes
- Future outcomes
- Opinions of others

Stoicism hasn't eliminated worry

but it has enabled me to deal with worries rationally.

Here are the "tactics" that have been most useful to me
๐Ÿ‘‡
Thread summary:

1. Cognitive distancing
2. Decatastrophizing
3. Accepting Fate
4. Preparing
5. Reminders

๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Cognitive Distancing

Stoicism teaches us to separate

our value judgements from outside events,

our thoughts from reality.

A number of practices can help with this.

1. Getting Up

Hitting a 10 minute alarm snooze

adds nothing to your day.

You can achieve two things

before the day even gets going:

1. Get up early
2. Make your bed

๐Ÿ‘‡
"At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself:

'I have to go to work โ€” as a human being.'

What do I have to complain of, if Iโ€™m going to do what I was born for โ€”

the things I was brought into the world to do?"

How do you respond when people wrong you? ๐Ÿ˜ก

10 guidelines directly from Marcus Aurelius.

First.

Concerning those that offend,

consider in the first place,

the relation you stand in towards men,

and that we are all made for each other.
Second.

Consider what sort of people they are at table, in bed, and so on.

Most of all, what sort of behaviour their opinions impose on them,

and their complacent pride in acting as they do.
