+Gomez now delivering his pre-recorded presidential address

#USCCB21
+Gomez:

To begin, I’d like to observe something obvious: We have been living through some extraordinary times.
#USCCB21
+Gomez:
We’ve seen a pandemic shut down our civilization, including the Church, for more than a year. We’ve lived through riots in our major cities, rising social divisions and unrest, and maybe the most polarized election our country has ever seen.
+Gomez:

Even with the lockdowns ending, our neighbors are still struggling. They’ve lost loved ones and livelihoods. Many have lost confidence in God and hope for the future. After being isolated for months, some have grown distrustful of our leaders and institutions.
#USCCB21
+Gomez:

In Fratelli Tutti, the Holy Father sets out his program for rebuilding the world after this pandemic. He gives us a beautiful vision of the unity and common destiny of the human family in God’s providential plan.

#USCCB21
+Gomez:

This vision has been inspiring to me in thinking about my own ministry. It seems to me that in these times when society is so divided, the Church has a great duty to more fully reflect the unity that God wants for his creation and his people.
+Gomez:

"The Church is divine, she is the Body of Christ. But we are all human in the Church...And we are living in a secular society where politics is becoming the... religion for a lot of people...
We need to guard against the temptation to think about the Church in simply political terms."

#USCCB21
+Gomez:

The Church’s unity is made real and visible in the Eucharist.

#USCCB21
+Gomez:

"Unity in the Church does not mean conformity of opinion or that bishops will never disagree. The apostles argued passionately. They disagreed over pastoral strategies and methods. But never about the truth of the Gospel."
Gomez, quoting Pope Francis:

"The bishops’ conference must be as one at this time, because the suffering people are one.”

#USCCB21
+Gomez:

"As we know, brothers, there are forces at work right now in our culture that threaten not only the unity of the human family, but also the very truth about God’s creation and human nature...."

#USCCB21
+Gomez:

"My brothers, we stand at a historic crossroads, as our Holy Father is telling us. It falls to the Church... to defend the truth about God the Creator, and the truth about the sanctity of the human person and the unity of the human family in God’s plan for creation.
This is our mission, the urgent task of the whole Church in this moment — after this pandemic, in the face of the chaos and confusion in our society."
+Gomez:

"I’m thinking that it has to start with me and with all of us. So, my prayer is that we all remain united in what is essential — our love for Jesus and our desire to proclaim him as the living God and the true path for humanity."

#USCCB21
+Gomez:
"As you know, I have a deep devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe....Let us look to her in this moment and entrust all our challenges to her maternal heart."

#USCCB21
+Gomez:

"May [Our Lady of Guadalupe] help us to keep our hearts humble and united in the service of Jesus, as we seek to continue the evangelization of our country and our continent in this moment."
#USCCB21
+Vigneron:

Thank you. We are at a crossroads, and must be renewed in Christ.

"And so for all the brothers, I want to thank you for our leadership to us. You have been our president at a remarkable time...you have worked so very hard for the mission of our conference."

#USCCB21
+Gomez calls for a 10-minute break.

I'll be back in 10 minutes (with a new thread.)

#USCCB21.

Hey Everybody:

In just a few minutes, day 3 of #USCCB21 will begin.

Stay tuned for live-tweets of the third day.
On the agenda today:

Here's a gif. Because "youths."

At #USCCB21 bishops will now discuss: Image
+Rhodes is now explaining pathway of document in pre-recorded message. Says there has been much confusion and bad information.

As pastors, we are concerned about decline in belief in the Real Presence. Then the pandemic didn't help that.

#USCCB21
The pandemic has however led to a greater appreciation of the Eucharist for some. But we worry that many Catholics may not come back to Mass. As St. Paul reminded the Corinthians: Image

Ok friends, we'll be returning to Day 2 #USCCB21 in just a moment.

First, discussion of a national framework for youth and young adults, presented by +Burns of Dallas.
And we are back.

+Gomez says there are some "questions" regarding the approval of amendments on "Called to the Joy of Love, and we'll discuss it again.
But for now +Burns discusses the development of a pastoral framework based upon Christus vivit, the post-synodal apostolic exhortation that came after the "youth synod."

Now at #USCCB21, bishops will discuss "Called to the Joy of Love" pastoral frameowrk and proposed amendments to them.

We dont have amendments yet but are promised them shortle.
Bishops are invited to ask for consideration of proposed amendments that the committee recommends for consent motion approval or rejection.

Cupich wants to ask for a particular amendment to be given individual consideration. We don't know which one yet. USCCB will send ASAP
+Cupich:
I want to talk about the both amendments I proposed, on page 26.

No one else asks for separate consideration. But first consent agenda amendments are adopted.

Hey everybody.

In 15 minutes, Day 2 of #USCCB21 will begin. Today is a pretty full schedule of debate, and I'll be livetweeting it all right here. (Well, in a couple different threads, just to make it easier.)
Before we get started, just a reminder: I aim to give you a straight summary of what's going on, and I do that in real time. I'm not always 💯, and I am often paraphrasing. A quote is not a quote without "..."

If I make an editorial aside, I try to label it as such

And I urge you to take this as a real-time, on the fly, best-as-I-can summary of what's going. If I get something wrong, feel free to note it, but please know I'm not trying to spin, gloss, or editorialize here, I'm trying to capture it.

Hey everybody, the opening session of #USCCB21 is set to resume in just a minute.

Right now, kinda heavy jazz is playing in the youtube while we wait.
The meeting is about an hour behind schedule, which, for a meeting scheduled for 90 minutes, is kinda remarkable.

What happened? A virtual floor fight over a motion to allow in the agenda indefinite discussion of the "Eucharistic coherence" document, on the agenda for thursday.
Supporters of motion said that seeking consensus means it is important that every bishop be heard. Critics said it was a stall tactic or a "filibuster" of the Eucharistic coherence document.

Motion failed 59%-41%. Bps have told me they didn't think it would be that close.
