Something that people don't seem to get about my occasional critiques about Junji Ito stories - in particular Uzumaki and Hellstar Remina - is the concept of agency, when a character is more proactive than reactive.
They seem to think I mean that the protagonists, in this...
...case Kirie and Remina, should have a happy ending to their stories and everything is resolved. The response is that Lovecraftian fiction often has the main character be unable to alter the outcome because they are a small speck in an uncaring universe, but that's not what...
...I mean at all. Again, that concept of being proactive instead of reactive. Kirie, in some stories, actively attempts to investigate the strange things going on in her town or preserve the life of herself, her friends, and her family. She does not always succeed and, in the...
...end, she ultimately dies. I was disappointed with the ending of Uzumaki not because we never get a proper explanation for things, but rather because it feels like her agency just STOPS, that she is simply decides to die without the narrative explaining why at THIS point...
...she is decided to give up and not make any more proactive choices.
Remina is even worse in this regard, because she VERY rarely makes choices for herself during Hellstar Remina. She spends most of the story on the run even when she does not want to be on the run, accepting...
...her fate without objection but her antagonists continually drive her to do what THEY want. As a result, Remina, despite being the main character and even title character, is little more than a prop in the shape of a person. She does not make any defiant stands, she does not...
...choose to oppose anything - even me saying she "accepts what's going on" is a bit of an exaggeration, since she seems to merely stand around until shoved by others to do things THEY want her to do.
And while one could argue, again, the Lovecraftian themes of futility...
...against such forces, plenty of other Junji Ito characters are still PROACTIVE in their stories - investigating, taking action for their own wants and desires, doing things that advance their own stories. For instance, I'm currently rereading the Strange Tale of Oshikiri...
...and while the titular Oshikiri does not actively attempt to resolve the situation with his bizarre house and its bridge to evil alternate universes, when he comes across something that he sees is wrong - evil versions of himself murdering friends and classmates, he...
...repeatedly attempts to intervene, to stop something wrong. He is still proactive because he is making a choice that he feels is correct and driving the plot forward as a result. And even though he, a schoolboy, cannot fix a house that's bleeding into other dimensions in a...
...way that will permanently resolve it, he still a protagonist who has agency. And this is the same for Lovecraftian fiction - sure, the main character can still be forced to die or suffer or be unable to fix the overall problem, but they can still be active and possess agency.

And I've said this before - the ending COULD have worked if you had the dialogue play it up. Kirie just letting loose about everything and accepting it because of the pointlessness of trying to fight on or the like. Instead it's just "Nah, I'll just die."
My journey through Ring and Grudge movies is nearing its end. I've still got the Bunshinsaba stuff to watch, but now I must watch the crappy attempt to revive the franchise from 2016 that I've seen snippets of... RINGS.
Don't know how much livetweeting there will be since I want to try to get as much done with as possible here and focus on that work, but right away: like the more SLIGHT glitchy touches with the Paramount logo, and then zooming out of it on a plane TV.
"This is gonna sound weird, but you ever hear about the video that kills you after you watch it?"
I should really just go with that to get people to stop talking to me on a flight.
Welp, time to enter the dark times for my Ring/Grudge marathoning. I'm finally checking out The Grudge 2020, which is apparently a Sidequel. I've heard nothing but bad things, but I'll give it a shot, though no promises on live-tweeting.
Next one after this will be Rings.
Pray for me - I've seen clips of it. DX
Okay, so already I've got a problem. You go to all the trouble of establishing the connection with the American Grudge, even the brief cameo by Kayako... but you screwed up the death groan!
Like... Disney spent billions of dollars to buy Star Wars and were making sequels to one of the most beloved film franchises of all time, with a bad reputation from the last films. This could make or break a lot of future monetary plans.
HOW DO YOU NOT GO IN WITH A PLAN?!
I frickin' LOVE Force Awakens and Last Jedi and it felt to me like there clearly HAD to be a plan since I felt they worked so well together, establishing a theme of the return of fascism - very relevant to today's audience - and the need to learn from the mistakes of the past...
PART 1 OF THE MEGAFORCE RETROSPECTIVE IS NOW REUPLOADED!
What's nice is that looking at the list, it seems both Part 2 AND 4 are still up (Part 4 in particular it seems I attempted a reupload last year. Part 3, as well, but that one got claimed) so that's less work I have to do.
Mind you, the annoying thing is that for most of these reuploads, I have to leave them on my channel virtually forever, just privated. Deleting a video removes views from the viewcount, so with older versions it could mean a loss of 100,000+ views in a single day.
Watching season 19 of Hell's Kitchen and God I forgot that the worst part of it is the pageantry in so much of the challenges. "Here's a hard rock band that screams ingredients! It's connected to food in a flimsy, vague way!"
Or even better: "Here's something mildly racist because we're focusing on a particular kind of international food! And now here are the chefs going whaaaaaat as if it's the weirdest thing ever!"
I like watching it, but man oh man every time I go back to full episodes I'm reminded of how much trash reality TV is. And this is just a COOKING show.
