Hong Kong's pro-democracy Apple Daily newspaper hit the stands Friday a day after police raided its newsroom, with an extra-large print run and a characteristic message of defiance emblazoned on its front that read: "We must press on" -- @AFP

Staff pushed on throughout the night to get the next day's edition out.

This time, they were surrounded by a gaggle of reporters from rival outlets documenting the seemingly inexorable decline of media freedoms in their city, an international media hub. Image
Editors settled on a simple front page featuring pictures of the five arrested executives. In a bold yellow font, they printed "We must press on", words the paper said CEO Cheung Kim-hung told staff as he was led away by police in handcuffs. Image
In the working class district of Mongkok, dozens of residents queued in the early morning hours for the first edition.

"Usually we sell around 60 copies but tonight, we just sold 1,800," the owner of one newsstand, who did not give his name, told @AFP. "Now it is all sold out." Image

Having witnessed skeletons being pulled from their shallow graves in the jungle camps this guy's gang used to run, I'm struggling to muster much sympathy.

Back in 2015:

The two boys in the back of the Thai police pickup truck were terrified. Dressed in ragged clothes, they had been caught close to a remote people smugglers' camp in southern Thailand where authorities found the remains of 26 people.

Local artist Kacey Wong has collected hundreds of spent candle stubs from previous vigils and plans to give them to residents on Friday night. Image
"Each burned candle contains a person's mourning towards those who sacrificed themselves in pursuit of democracy, as well as one's longing for democracy, a mix of complex emotions," Wong told @AFP. "I hope they can continue to shine the way towards freedom and democracy." Image

"Beijing’s appetite for guiding public opinion – covertly, if necessary -- extends beyond its borders and beyond core strategic interests, like Taiwan, Hong Kong and Xinjiang."
“You have a seismic, slow but large continental shift in narratives,” said Timothy Graham, a senior lecturer at Queensland University of Technology who studies social networks. “Steer it just a little bit over time, it can have massive impact.”
