Launch day! I forgot how fun (and yes, stressful) these can be. 🧵
1/ Today, California became the first state in the country to launch an open source, standards-based digital vaccination record. Using the SMART Health Card framework, any resident who wants a digital copy of their vaccination record can get one at myvaccinerecord.cdph.ca.gov.
2/ This is entirely voluntary - anyone who's been vaccinated in California who wants a digital copy of their CDC card, this is for you. Don't want a digital copy? Totally cool! You still got vaccinated, which helped California re-open this week. Thank you. 🙏🏻
3/ I just got out of the press conference where Dr. Pan from @CAPublicHealth and Amy Tong from @CADeptTech briefed the members of the press on what we've launched; you can see the press release here: cdt.ca.gov/news/californi…
@CAPublicHealth@CADeptTech 4/ Thought folks might find some of the background on what we've been up to the last few months. I've been privileged to be part of some big launches over the years, but this one feels special. ❤️
@CAPublicHealth@CADeptTech 5/ Shortly before I went into public service, I had a conversation with @R_Thaler about the upcoming nationwide vaccination effort. One of the areas we touched on was how people would share their vaccination info; surely a piece of paper wasn't all we'd have?
@CAPublicHealth@CADeptTech@R_Thaler@GavinNewsom 7/ So what launched? If you were vaccinated in California, this is a voluntary, digital copy of your vaccination record. Built on VCI's SMART Health Card framework, this is a secure, verifiable record that shows information about your vaccination(s). vci.org/about
@CAPublicHealth@CADeptTech@R_Thaler@GavinNewsom 8/ By adopting an open source framework, we're joining a growing number of organizations who are committed to a standards-based approach to giving patients control over their info, who can then decide to share their vaccination info if they want to.
13/ Android users who use the @MyCommonHealth app can scan the SMART Health Card QR code and add their vaccination record to the app so they have an easy backup on their device: play.google.com/store/apps/det…
14/ Bottom line? This open, free, secure standard is a textbook example of how public and private organizations can innovate and encourage cooperation and collaboration: users win.
15/ Speaking of public and private collaboration, special shout-outs: @mickytripathi1 and his team at @ONC_HealthIT; @bandersmd, @calonghurst, @jpp9, @JoshCMandel and the rest of the leadership team at VCI: the country is in good hands, and I’m grateful for their guidance.
16/ Now can I brag on my team? On my team are software engineers, QA specialists, data analysts, web designers and developers, product managers, devsecops engineers. Every one of those teams has had a hand in this launch.
17/ They demoed the first POC less than a week after my initial pitch; a working prototype followed a week later. A week after that, we were collaborating with the CDPH team to figure out how best to connect to the immunization registry.
18/ Somewhere in there, I reached out to @USDResponse and asked if they could help; they connected us with a fantastic volunteer product manager, who's helped the team manage a growing number of product decisions.
19/ As we neared launch day, representatives from a growing number of companies provided critical assistance to ensure things would go smoothly today:
20/ As we anticipated an increase in outbound messages from people asking to get their digital vaccine record, reps from @Microsoft@Google and @Verizon (for Yahoo/Aol) helped us confirm we'd done what we needed to do to get our messages to our residents.
21/ From day one, we enjoyed the complete support of @CADeptTech's leader, Amy Tong. She never doubted we could do this, and grasped why it would be so good for California and its residents to go the route we chose. Today doesn't happen w/o her leadership.
@CADeptTech 22/ Speaking of leadership: one of my favorite moments from this entire project was demoing this for @TAragonMD and @ericapanMD_CDPH at @CAPublicHealth. (Full disclosure: first time, we found a bug. But the *second* demo was awesome. 😂)
@CADeptTech@TAragonMD@ericapanMD_CDPH@CAPublicHealth 23/ Dr. Aragón’s kind words afterwards aren't mine to share; but I will say this: I am so grateful to live in a state where he and Dr. Pan put California residents and their health at the forefront of every decision they make. What a privilege to get to collaborate on this!
24/ I hope California residents find this useful. (And if they don't? Again, entirely up to them to use it or not!) I could not be prouder of the work the team did, and am excited to connect w/other states who want to learn more about how they can do what we did. (Standards FTW!)
25/ Finally, a few tips for my fellow Californians:
- try both your cell phone and your email when you request your record
- make sure your name is your full name (no nicknames!)
- contact info could be from earlier vaccination records (pre-covid)
26/ ... and if your data *is* missing (contact info, for instance), @CAPublicHealth launched a virtual assistant today as well that will help isolate what might be missing and work with you to add it so you can retrieve your record. More info here: chat.myturn.ca.gov/?id=17
1/ While I'm under no illusions that Trump's transition to Joe Biden will be graceful, I'm inspired by each of the prior transitions that preceded 45's hand-off to 46.
Take a step back for a moment and admire the precision, the discipline, the confidence of the Biden team.
Not over till the votes are counted of course. But @jomalleydillon and her operation sure seem like a well-run ship right now, and that's giving me hope.
Lots to admire:
- Biden's crisp, calm, brief speech last night
- no leaks from 'campaign officials' to on-air pundits throughout the evening
- forceful briefing this morning declaring what will happen over next 72 hours
- unequivocal rejection of Trump's lies
Overall message couldn't be clearer or more consistent:
1) count every vote (including those who didn't vote for us, it's OK) 2) let the process work 3) we've got this
In other words. Trust. Trust the system, trust the voters, trust us.
There it is. The President has just recklessly claimed a victory that he has absolutely not won.
Credit to MSNBC (anyone else?) for stepping in and calling him on the lie. But it's still an appalling new low for our country.
These ballots reflect votes ALREADY CAST. Votes cast by American citizens. On time.
And I know his team knows this. And the press knows this. It's nothing more than a cynical attempt at whipping up partisan rage to try and cloud the issue.
Which, to be clear, is: ALL VOTES CAST BY TODAY MUST BE COUNTED. Period. Full stop.
