Who is #EbrahimRaisi, the next President of #Iran? I explain here:

thehindu.com/news/internati…
#EbrahimRaisi was reportedly a member of the so-called death commission that implemented Khomeini's decree to execute political prisoners in 1988 after the Iran-Iraq war. With his win, the clerical establishment has taken absolute control over all structures of power in #Iran.

Editorial

With #EbrahimRaisi's win, the conservatives have taken over all institutions of state power in Iran. But his presidency cones at a critical time for Iran. There are signs that the revolution is ageing. #Iran

Thread: Why the Indian govt is reaching out to Pakistan, Taliban and J&K parties? My sense is this. The crackdown in Kashmir & a hot LoC had been factored in in China's aggression on the LAC. Briefly, India faced the two-front threat. Then came the US withdrawal from Afghanistan.
India wants to focus on LAC. The rise of the Mujaheddin & Taliban in Afghanistan in the past had had implications for Kashmir. The US pullout now leaves Pak and Taliban stronger. Faced with the China challenge, India doesn't want things to go out of hand in the western border.
India had realised this challenge months ago. In Jan, it held secret intel-level talks with Pakistan in the UAE, which led to both sides recommitting to the ceasefire on Feb 25. And then, it started establishing contacts with the Taliban through their political office in Doha.

Israel and the UAE reach historic deal which will normalise relations between the countries. UAE will be the third Arab country, after Egypt in 1979 and Jordan in 1994, opening formal diplomatic ties with Israel. Next could be Saudi Arabia.
As part of the deal, Israel will suspend plans to annex the Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank. Israel and the Gulf Arab kingdoms had stepped up informal contacts in recent years, mainly driven by shared concerns on Iran. The deal is historic.
This is the only diplomatic victory of President Trump as he goes to polls in Nov. His Iran policy was disastrous. His North Korea outreach reached nowhere. But here, at least he can claim the first peace deal between Israel and a Gulf Arab country was clinched under his watch.

In Oct 1939, the month Congress asked its provincial ministers to resign, Savarkar met British Viceroy Linlithgow in Bombay and pledged his cooperation. He told the Viceroy that the British govt 'must now work with the support of the Hindus..old antagonism no longer necessary.'
Gandhi said in Aug1942, 'Hindus like Moonje & Savarkar who believe in the doctrine of the sword may seek to keep Muslims under Hindu domination. I dont represent them. I represent Congress.' Godse, during the trial, called Savarkar 'the most faithful advocate of the Hindu cause'.
In 1911 Savarkar wrote a clemency plea. In 1913 he wrote another, pledging to "serve govt in any capacity they like, for as many conversion is conscientious, so I hope my future conduct would be. By keeping me in jail nothing can be got in comparison to what would be otherwise.'
