As someone with a relatively large platform, I’d like to take today to make a thread of black trans people in need. If you’re a black trans person, add your need post below. I’ll also add ones I find.
Happy Juneteenth, white ppl RT this and give reparations.
I am so tired of being asked to help cis people cope with my existence.
I’m busy coping with my existence, and more importantly, I’m busy coping with the active vitriol cis people have towards my existence.
How dare you ask me to help you cope with me deigning to exist.
I don’t exist for you. I don’t exist for anyone but myself. And I am so tired of being treated as public property simply because I make cis people uncomfortable.
“But what if someone misuses this accommodation” is not an excuse to deny it to everyone
The fact that this needs to be pointed out is ABSURD
So I’m seeing a lot of replies that are basically “set up a system of accountability and we’ll be fine” and frankly? Nah.
I would literally ALWAYS rather more people get accommodations and “cheat” than anyone be denied accommodations they need.
I think a lot of why the “listen to biology” rhetoric is so compelling is because there is a widespread cultural myth that science is equivalent to objective truth. As a scientist, this is not the case.
Science is a method by which to seek a hypothetical objective truth.
There have been many other methods. I’m sure there will be more in the future. I find the scientific method to be compelling.
But science, as a body of knowledge, is far from absolute. We are perpetually adding, refining, and relearning scientific concepts and “facts”.
The scientific “facts” from 100 years ago look absurd to us now. Why should our science of today look any different 100 years from now?
Science is a constant process of building on what came before, with the best knowledge and reasoning that we have.
I’m very thankful that the trans Twitter community has gotten to a place where we can discuss this, because this exact issue has had very tangible negative impact on my life.
As a transmasculine person who came out in adulthood and who has a history with very gendered abuse, THE major factor that stopped me from transitioning was terror that I would become the type of man who had abused me. I was afraid that there was no other option of masculinity.
While I was questioning, I found an online trans community to do research for myself. This community was majority transfeminine. That isn’t a problem inherently, however this community had an issue with vilifying masculinity and all masculine traits at large.
