The @WhiteHouse is tweeting about infrastructure – not DC Statehood or the For the People Act.

No tweets by @POTUS @VP at all, yet.

If @JoeBiden @KamalaHarris believe our democracy is at risk from authoritarianism, pls act like it!

Use the bully pulpit & protect voting rights.
There’s the public statement of support from this @potus that I’d looked for earlier.
If our democracy is “in peril,” then this @whitehouse needs to rally all Americans to defend it based upon shared public facts, from debunking @potus45’s lies of fraud to changing Senate rules.
More presidential attention, but no deeper insight into how the President or Senator Majority Leader propose to overcome the filibuster that has sunk civil rights legislation in previous years.
Watching @cspan 2, where Senators are debating on whether to open debate on voting reform legislation..
c-span.org/event/?512831/…
@VP Harris is presiding, & would be a 51st vote if needed.
@cspan @VP The Senate is now voting on whether to begin debate on #S1, an omnibus bill that would reform various aspects of elections, voting, & ethics in the USA: congress.gov/bill/117th-con… Relevant disclosure: I helped draft the Honest Ads Act, in Section 4201, & support this bill's passage.
Because the filibuster endures, 60 votes are needed to begin debate on #S1 in the US Senate.

It's now 42 yes to 37 no, but there has been no indication for weeks that there are 10 Republican votes for this bill, & it's a 50-50 Senate.

Loud laughter in the chamber just now.
That's it: 50-50, as expected.
@SenSchumer is making a statement from the floor, saying what we can see: state legislatures are passing laws that restrict voting rights justified by lies about a stolen election.
3 of 5 Republicans believe @POTUS45's lies:
washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/…
@SenSchumer @POTUS45 .@SenSchumer said a voting rights bill will come up again, & the Senate will advance it.
"We going to explore every last one of our options. We have to. Voting rights are too fundamental."
"This voter suppression cannot stand."
But if the Senate doesn't change the rules, it will.
This @POTUS said the “fight is far from over” & that he would “have more to say on this next week.”whitehouse.gov/briefing-room/…
@TheJusticeDept @WhiteHouse & Congress need to use their powers to protect & defend voting rights & @civilrights, or our union of the People will not endure.

Tuning in to @DFRLab's virtual conference now, with @GrahamBrookie & @Rosejackson3 kicking off, recounting just how much happened in the last year.

Next up: @krmaher & @BrandyZadrozny.

I'm looking forward to learning more about DFR's new Democracy & Tech Initiative.

Lives on Twitter via @AtlanticCouncil. @krmaher noted access to free knowledge is fundamentally disruptive to closed societies & governments aground the world.
She said @Wikimedia has built out the @wikipedia platform to be resilient against country-specific takedowns. #360OS
Can for-profit tech companies do what @Wikipedia has done?
@krmahawr models that bring people into setting policies for content & community standards. It’s expensive, hard, & takes years, she says, but products will be better in the long-term & mitigate negative harms. #360OS

Watching.

USAG Garland says @TheJusticeDept will double the @CivilRights enforcement staff to protect right to vote.

Garland says DoJ will use all of the relevant federal statutes to protect every qualifying American seeking to participate in our democracy.

A watershed moment.
@TheJusticeDept @CivilRights "…each of us has a moral obligation to stand up, speak up and speak out. When you see something that is not right, you must say something. You must do something. Democracy is not a state. It is an act" - @repjohnlewis, quoted by USAG Garland today.
nytimes.com/2020/07/30/opi…
@TheJusticeDept @CivilRights @repjohnlewis Hope @TheJusticeDept posts these remarks online soon; there's a lot here, from USAG saying Congress needs to pass S.1 & the John Lewis Voting Rights Act, to provide @TheJusticeDept the tools it needs, or reference to @POTUS' EO on voting to new guidance.

A special citation of Darnella Frazier by @PulitzerPrizes for recording the murder of George Floyd is a reminder how we all can bear witness in the 21st century washingtonpost.com/media/2021/06/…
First Amendment rights to record & publish extend to all Americans, not just credentialed press
@PulitzerPrizes “A country's constitutional culture is made up of the stories we tell each other about the kind of nation we are.”–@YBenkler

"If we want to protect all acts of journalism, we need to change the stories we tell about press freedom"– @jcstearns

Today did.

This bill (#SB7) was drafted in secret, expanded to include voting restrictions, & rushed through the Texas Senate on Saturday under suspension of rules, without time for Texans to read the legislation:
texastribune.org/2021/05/30/tex…
The @VP identified it as an attack on voting rights Image
President @JoeBiden said this Texas bill “attacks the sacred right to vote” & connected it to a broader “assault on democracy” that “disproportionately targets Black & Brown Americans.

“It’s wrong & un-American.”-@POTUS Image
🚨🇺🇸🚨“language was also inserted in the bill making it easier to overturn an election, no longer requiring evidence that fraud actually altered an outcome of a race but rather only that enough ballots were illegally cast that could have made a difference”

No reports of other vehicles or threats on Capitol Hill.

(This is breaking news, so please be mindful of rumors & conspiracy merchants spreading BS.)
I haven't gone down to the Capitol, but @lindsemcpherson is on the ground, documenting rapid response:

I'm listening, just as @nnamdikid did for 23 years.
The 5 times I got to go on @kojoshow remain highlights of my career. He's an incredible interviewer.
His retirement will leave a gaping void in public media for the District & region.
