I struggled with alcohol addiction for over 20 years, among other destructive habits.

Today I launched my app @kinhabits, based on the learnings that saved my life.

Founders need to build better habits, not just better products. Here's why:

[A thread]
I started drinking because I felt an incredible amount of guilt about my failing startup, Exec.

Alcohol made me feel like Superman in social situations, but it also helped me numb the pain when I was alone.
Suppressing my emotions with drinking became an abusive relationship - I was addicted to the delayed pain.

That cycle is not easily broken, but it can be done by breaking old habits and building healthier ones.
I learned how to hack habits with help from @JamesClear’s book Atomic Habits. He breaks it down into a science:

Rule #1: don't rely on motivation. It's a finite resource and unpredictable for long-term change.
Design your environment with great intention.

When I wanted to quit drinking, I told everyone so that I couldn't back out. I engineered my reality by priming my environment.

Drinking became a hostile choice.
You should focus on creating a system instead of a one time goal.

Use accountability to maintain consistency.
@kinhabits is a social habit tracker. It's me productizing my sobriety journey.

It is very personal. I built this for myself and friends who's been struggling with addiction.

We use this to help each other out. We've been beta-testing for over a year...
... and it's working. The results we see convinced us to bring this to the world.

We went live on @producthunt today, go check out and drop an upvote to help us get to #1:

My co-founders @amittm, @OmarJalalzada, @damienkan and I are giving everyone who RTs this thread a 50% discount on all Kin courses for the rest of this year.

DM me your phone number after RT and we'll set you up.

Here's to having better habits 🙏

Just had (one of) the most powerful and impactful conversations of my life with @balajis

We discuss crypto, decentralization, China, woke culture, and how to build a city:

(thread)
The primitives that a crypto address can give a user are comparable to the explosion of capabilities that mobile and the internet gave you.
In 2013, Balaji predicted that tensions and an eventual backlash were brewing against SV.

The signs were there. No-one caught it; except for Balaji. He called it 'Silicon Valley's Ultimate Exit'

Cool things I learned from @balajis:

[A thread]
Building a city

- Vote with feet + wallet
- Coordinate with social
- Crowd-fund with crypto
- Migrate with mobile

My first company @twitch sold for a billion dollars.

My second one lost $75 million in 36 months.

People love talking about success, but today I'm going to talk about failure.

It's time to be honest about Atrium:
During my time as Partner at @ycombinator, my ambition to build something big only grew.

I took the plunge and decided to follow the 'age-old' wisdom of fixing my own problem and building a startup around the solution.

(cont.)
I hated doing legal work for my startups and never really understood what I was paying for.

The entire experience was too complicated and opaque. I started Atrium to make this easier for founders.

It took me a long time to learn that happiness is something you can train yourself to become better at it. It just takes some dedication, practice and persistence.

These habits have helped me become a much happier person:
1. Gratitude Journaling:

Find three things that you are grateful for in your life, and write them down every single morning. It could be anything as simple as your morning coffee to being healthy.
2. Negative Visualization:

Close your eyes and visualize a really bad hypothetical situation. What if you suddenly went blind, or suffered from a serious injury?

When I started justin.tv, it felt like an impossible task.

Here's some important advice on how you can start doing anything:

[thread]
Many people, when faced with doing something new that they know nothing about, won’t ever get started.
The idea behind justin.tv was simple enough: a 24 hour livestream video feed of our SF adventures, which would be broadcasted from a portable camera to online viewers.

Like most things in life however, theory and practice are very different things.
