BREAKING: we just sued a mob of Trump supporters-alongside @protctdemocracy & @WillkieFarr-who tried to drive a Biden campaign bus off the road in TX last fall. We must take action to deter this kind of #PoliticalViolence before it destroys our democracy
A mob of Trump supporters in TX used fear, intimidation, and threat of violence to silence their political opponents last fall, but this is not an isolated incident. #VoterIntimidation#TrumpTrainTXAttack
BREAKING: We won our lawsuit against Galveston County!
🧵1/7 Today’s win strikes down the 2021 Galveston County redistricting map drawn in a way that discriminated against the county’s Black and Latino citizens. Galveston County has been ordered to redraw the map by October 20
🧵2/7 We worked in tandem with our partners and community members to ensure that our most marginalized residents of Galveston County have a seat at the table of Democracy.
🧵3/7 “We are thrilled with today’s decision - now, Black and Latino Galveston residents will once again have a fair shot to influence the decisions that shape their community,” -Sarah Xiyi Chen
VICTORY: This week at the #txlege, here are few bad bills we fought hard against that didn't make the May 8 deadline and are officially considered "dead" 🎉💀
🟢HB 2883: Would have created more border checkpoints
🟢 HB 1610: Related to state control of constitutional challenges
🟢 HB 4006: Property ban against Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern immigrants
👉Increased reliance on Title 8 expedited removal processing, meaning that people will be placed on fast-track removal processes while in immigration jail - including in CBP custody, which is notorious for dangerous conditions of detention, abuses, & limited access to counsel.
👉The asylum transit ban, which makes it exceedingly more difficult for people to access asylum. The ban will also force people to use the CBP One app for an appointment–an app with countless glitches & limited appointment slots per day–prior to presenting at a Port of Entry.
NOW: There was a last minute committee sub for SB 12, which is the bill that would “prevent minors from attending drag performances”
While they removed language specific to drag performances, the bill’s original intent remains.
Texas wants to wipe out LGBTQ communities. #txlege
Because of SB 12’s vague language, this bill could lead many businesses, including their insurers, to take precautions and greatly diminish drag performances in Texas.
It could also lead to the cancellation of public celebrations for Pride Month, including Pride parades.
SB 12 is attempting to erase the spaces in Texas where drag is welcome and scare parents and businesses from including kids in performances that express queer joy and beauty.
Today, a slew of bad border bills hit the House floor at the #txlege
We don’t say this lightly: HB 20, HB 7, and HB 800 are dangerous for Texas communities.
Follow + share this thread as we’ll be covering the debate with live updates! 🧵⬇️
Following the tragedy in Brownsville that killed 8 migrants, we fear that more acts of terror against migrants will occur if lawmakers continue to fuel xenophobic and racist narratives with legislation like HB 20.
🚨BREAKING: We are joining 40+ partner orgs to request that the US Dept. of Justice @CivilRights deploys federal observers to monitor the 2022 midterm election in Harris County, TX. After the Texas Secretary of State's recent announcement, we need federal action NOW 🧵
Days before early voting began, TX SOS declared it was sending election inspectors and a “legal task force” from the TX AG to Harris County. This is a clear effort to sow doubt in the integrity of the county’s election process & lay the groundwork to discredit election results.
“Rather than protect Texans' right and freedom to vote, the [TX SOS] is focused on undermining the election process in Harris County—an area of Texas which has ...been a target for...voter suppression...Harris County needs support from the federal government" - Hani Mirza, TCRP
