BREAKING: We won our lawsuit against Galveston County!

🧵1/7 Today’s win strikes down the 2021 Galveston County redistricting map drawn in a way that discriminated against the county’s Black and Latino citizens. Galveston County has been ordered to redraw the map by October 20 🧵2/7 We worked in tandem with our partners and community members to ensure that our most marginalized residents of Galveston County have a seat at the table of Democracy.

VICTORY: This week at the #txlege, here are few bad bills we fought hard against that didn't make the May 8 deadline and are officially considered "dead" 🎉💀

In this case, may they not rest in peace 🤭...🧵 #BeyondBorders DEAD bills:

🟢HB 2883: Would have created more border checkpoints
🟢 HB 1610: Related to state control of constitutional challenges
🟢 HB 4006: Property ban against Russian, Asian, and Middle Eastern immigrants

NEW: Today, Title 42 is ending.

For 3 years, Title 42 closed US ports of entry, turning away thousands of asylum seekers & sending them back to danger & uncertainty.

While the policy is ending, it's not time to celebrate.

@POTUS has announced the following plans... 🧵 👉Increased reliance on Title 8 expedited removal processing, meaning that people will be placed on fast-track removal processes while in immigration jail - including in CBP custody, which is notorious for dangerous conditions of detention, abuses, & limited access to counsel.

NOW: There was a last minute committee sub for SB 12, which is the bill that would “prevent minors from attending drag performances”

While they removed language specific to drag performances, the bill’s original intent remains.

Texas wants to wipe out LGBTQ communities. #txlege Because of SB 12’s vague language, this bill could lead many businesses, including their insurers, to take precautions and greatly diminish drag performances in Texas.

It could also lead to the cancellation of public celebrations for Pride Month, including Pride parades.

Today, a slew of bad border bills hit the House floor at the #txlege

We don’t say this lightly: HB 20, HB 7, and HB 800 are dangerous for Texas communities.

Follow + share this thread as we’ll be covering the debate with live updates! 🧵⬇️ Following the tragedy in Brownsville that killed 8 migrants, we fear that more acts of terror against migrants will occur if lawmakers continue to fuel xenophobic and racist narratives with legislation like HB 20.

Take action against HB 20 here⬇️ #txlege

🚨BREAKING: We are joining 40+ partner orgs to request that the US Dept. of Justice @CivilRights deploys federal observers to monitor the 2022 midterm election in Harris County, TX. After the Texas Secretary of State's recent announcement, we need federal action NOW 🧵 Days before early voting began, TX SOS declared it was sending election inspectors and a “legal task force” from the TX AG to Harris County. This is a clear effort to sow doubt in the integrity of the county’s election process & lay the groundwork to discredit election results.

🚨🚨🚨 Interrupting the wordle tweets to once again raise the alarm about voting rights in Texas 🚨🚨🚨

@TXsecofstate needs to provide guidance on the cure process for VBM application rejections. This process is mandatory & voters whose applications were rejected need it ASAP Advocates repeatedly warned @TXsecofstate about this exact danger when the #txlege considered SB1, but these concerns were always dismissed.

Legislators were too intent on passing their poorly written anti-voter bill to think about the potential consequences for Texans.

🚨BREAKING: we just sent a letter to the Texas Secretary of State demanding answers to some basic questions re: this "audit." We request a response by close of business on September 28th. 🧵👇

READ THE FULL LETTER HERE: docs.google.com/document/d/1zE… 1. What is the legal & factual basis for this review? The Press Release claims “existing Texas laws” grant Secretary of State “the authority to conduct a full & comprehensive forensic audit of any election,” yet the Press Release noticeably fails to cite any source of law.

We got a win! This Tuesday, a federal judge ordered that Pamela Rivas be given back her land, which was seized for the border wall in Los Ebanos, TX. This is the end of a condemnation fight that began under Pres. Bush in 2008. Pamela Rivas stands on the banks of a body of water on her l Rivas said that "going up against all the power of the federal government was intimidating, but this land has been in my family for generations." Before he died, she promised her father that she would "fight to keep the land that belongs to us." texarkanagazette.com/news/texas/sto…

‼️ TODAY ‼️ TCRP and members of the Rio Grande Valley Welcoming Committee will meet with Department of Homeland Security Secretary @SecMayorkas at 3 pm.

The Committee issued the following statement in advance of the meeting: “Today, we are sitting down with @SecMayorkas so that he hears what people in the Valley actually need. Leaders from our communities are the ones doing the work day-in-and-day-out to build back better, as @POTUS has promised to do after the cruelty Trump left at our border."

🚨BREAKING! Finally, a VICTORY for Texas Voters.

After more than five years of court battles, a settlement has been reached in our litigation against the state of Texas for violation of the National Voter Registration Act, commonly known as the ‘motor voter’ law. With this settlement, current & future Texans now have permanent protections safeguarding their right to register to vote any time they renew or update their driver's license ONLINE. This is an important step toward chipping away at the state's effort to suppress the vote.

ICYMI, last night the U.S. Attorney General ordered Governor Abbott to rescind his executive order on migrants and COVID-19.

TL;DR: the Department of Justice agrees with us - this executive order is blatantly illegal ➡️ reuters.com/article/us-usa… We're working with partners and allies to monitor things on the ground. Check out this thread from @FairDefense for a full update on where things stand 👇

The final version of #SB7 keeps horrible provisions from the House and the Senate versions and adds a whole host of new, egregious suppression measures.

The lack of transparency in this conference committee process was equally as egregious. #txlege “Show me your papers” to Curbside Vote:
Requires drivers of three or more voters to fill out onerous new forms
Driver and all other passengers must exit the vehicle unless assisting voter, no matter the weather or other conditions, while a poll watcher could enter the vehicle.

3 years ago this week, our South Texas team walked into a Federal courtroom where our government separated families through a violent border-wide policy. “Will I see my children again?” asked hundreds.

But family separation was not just a Trump practice. It continues today. Policies like Title-42, i.e. the forced expulsion of hundreds of thousands of immigrants under the guise of a healthcare law, continue under @JoeBiden. T-42 and toxic @DHSgov practices continue to separate families at the border- our team sees it daily.

UPDATE: just before 4:00am this morning, the Texas House voted 81-64 to advance a version of #SB7. Here's a great rundown of where things stand from the @TexasTribune (1/4)
texastribune.org/2021/05/07/tex… The final bill appears to be quite different than what we started the night with. It is still NOT available to the public and likely won't be until this afternoon after another procedural vote. It will then head to the Senate, presumably to a conference committee. (2/4) #txlege

🚨 HAPPENING NOW🚨

The TX House is beginning debate over voter suppression bill #SB7 — an attack on the state’s most vulnerable voting communities, and companion to #HB6. Watch live now: tlchouse.granicus.com/MediaPlayer.ph…

Need a refresher on #SB7 and #HB6? We got you covered👇 Listening to @jessicafortexas force @BriscoeCain to admit that he simply doesn't believe voters of color, voters with disabilities, and young voters when they say that #SB7 would suppress their votes.

We're experiencing secondhand embarrassment for Rep. Cain as he defends SB7.

The supporters of #HB6 and #SB7 challenged people to “read the bills and point to voter suppression.”

Today, 63 civil rights orgs have gladly accepted that challenge & are releasing two joint statements outlining some of the sections that would harm voters the most #txlege We come from all walks of life in Texas: rural & urban, young and elderly, people of color, voters w/ disabilities, working Texans & those experiencing poverty, and people of faith & those who are secular. We stand united against the voter suppression that these bills represent.

SB 23 is not alone. There's a slate of bills at the #txlege that would punish cities for ANY REDUCTION in police budgets, or any reallocation of funds from law enforcement to other community programs/budget areas. See bills here: txcivilrights.org/bills-that-pun…

exceptions for cities making across-the-board cuts or reductions following disaster declarations, but....
