People forget that Gujarat was NOT this default BJP state we think of it as now. Through the 80s and 90s, the congress was very much relevant. And the state BJP was full of infighting. Vajpayee sent Modi to try and saffronize the state. And he succeeded.

I just remembered how Smriti Irani, brand new to the BJP back in those days picked a public fight with Modi about some pretend panga with Vajpayee in her melodramatic way. Like seriously thinking there was an ABV-Modi rift. And shut up after Nagpur was like, abeyaar it's theater.
Just like many of you folks, she bought into the WWE style feud story and thought that a "fast unto death" stunt will make her popular with the PM. And ABV is like, abeyaar someone tell this newbie how things work.

Btw people keep saying in different ways "rss and advani stopped vajpayee from firing modi" which is basically the theater they put forth. The RSS or the made up post of deputy PM has no legal standing or power to stop a PM from invoking Article 365.
