Three of the arugula seeds that I attempted to grow have sprouted & produced a few leaves.

As a treat, I picked one of the leaves & rejoiced in the harvested bounty.

It tasted amazing.

Then I started thinking...
Thinking about how the Stoics & Peripatetics thought plants had souls, but not at the same level of intensity as humans & animals.
Psyche was basically a life force powered by pneuma , & there were different levels. The higher the level of intensity, the more stuff a creature could do. Plants could grow and reproduce, animals could do that, but also had sense perception & goal oriented movement.
Humans had all the life force powers of plants & animals, but were also capable of reason & speech, which was why we get to run the show.
And his is what I do with my high pneumatic intensity soul that makes me capable of reason & speech. I eat my harvest of one fresh arugula leaf & wonder if it tastes so good because it still has that vibrant, tasty plant soul inside of it because it didn't get a chance to escape.
And then I think "Mmm- tasty plant soul," and then I use my reason and speech capable higher rational soul to tweet about it.
This is also why a lot of Greco-Roman texts lay it on thick with the "Decline of Civilization" trope, which usually happens when people w/rational souls use them to do dumb things.

@jackvelbar @freedomsbride I'm glad that @freedomsbride could call on you. I hope we see more men in the days ahead doing everything they can to hold their brothers accountable.
@jackvelbar @freedomsbride Part of the reason that abuse is rife in the SBC is b/c the standards that men are expected to meet before they recieve a Maturity Badge are pitifully low. Some men do more than the bare minimum, but they don't have to as a precondition to recieve and maintain power & authority.
@jackvelbar @freedomsbride Predators flourish partly because they flatter non-predators who are weak men, offering them the pseudo-dignity of being recieved as a God's Warrior Fighting for the Truth in exchange for continuing to upholde the predator as a worthy leader.

@AndrewH88063358 Thanks, @AndrewH88063358 - Part of what is going on in the "experiential avoidance" dynamic is that there is very little practical wisdom in large sectors of white American evangelicalism about how people grow to become more like Jesus. 1/
@AndrewH88063358 If they aren't coming in with some relational capital that helps them form a healthy attachment to God, it can be pretty hard for people to find relationships that can help them learn how to pray and connect with Jesus so they can grow.
@AndrewH88063358 This is really sad because this is the last thing they are intending to do. Nobody means for it to be this way, except maybe a handful of uber-predators who are self-aware of how they benefit from the system.

It's that magical time of year in which my husband and I summon each other to the sun room with an excited squeal that announces that it is time to fawn over fawns. This strong lil' fella was an iddy biddy venison nugget trying to walk only a couple of weeks ago. Why you stare, hooman?
How does Paul get any work done with all the woodland creatures in view from the window by his desk?

Strain your eyes, dear reader, to gaze upon the tiny bun at the center of this picture. Iz tiny bun
He's the most aesthetically pleasing type of yard bunny- satisfying chonky despite smolness, black eyes instead of unsettling red ones.

A thread on pornography addiction in white evangelical churches, oversimplification of knowledge and growth, and why it's hard for these communities to deal with sexual predators like Ravi Zacharias: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1360618…
@socofthesacred - a thread on how evangelical models of knowledge and growth perpetuate pornography addiction, even in attempts to people who are struggling; and how this leads to an inability to recognize and respond to sexual predators like @RaviZacharias
Postscript: To borrow a metaphor from Jeremy Begbie to think about the Mind of the Spirit vs the Mind of the Flesh in Rom 8 and apply it to well-intententioned but misguided ways that churches try to help people struggling with sex addiction (or just about any other struggle):

Part of what is going on here is that large sectors of evangelicalism are poorly equipped to help people deal with basic struggles, let alone the ubiquitous pornography addictions that most of their men have been enslaved to for years.
On the one hand, there's a high standard of holiness. On the other hand, there's a model of growth that is basically "Try Harder to Mean it More." Identify the relevant scriptural truth & believe it with all of your sincerity so that you may access the Holy Spirit's help to obey.
Helping sincere believers believe and obey the Bible facts is pretty much all the Holy Spirit does these days, other than convict us of our sins in light of the Bible facts.

@scott_m_coley @ApplePodcasts Very grateful for you & @RobDownenChron 's work in shining light on the SBC. As someone who grew up in the SBC & remains close ties to members and congregations, I am simultaneously grateful about moves to develop curricula & skeptical about what this can accomplish in the SBC
@scott_m_coley @ApplePodcasts @RobDownenChron The dominant model of growth is "Try Harder to Mean it More." When people see the relevant information "biblically" and sincerely believes the biblical truth and has good intentions, there is an expectation that people will now see clearly & will discern act accordingly.
@scott_m_coley @ApplePodcasts @RobDownenChron Problems are therefore seen as a lack of correct biblically informed understanding or failures of sincere faith in individuals. This makes the SBC system blind and practice blind.
