1. I guess while going Hanumānji was flying under the radar so to speak. I agree he did not swim. But he was flying very close to water (enough to splash waters on his chest and create eddie-currents in water - this happens when one is either in water or very close to it)

While returning, he had already wreaked Lankā. Most of its defences burnt and the presiding protector deity of Lankā (Lankini) defeated.

That is when Hanumān ji flew like a proper vimāna. Up above the world so high, like a diamond in the sky.

From military perspective, the adhibhautika (and adhidaivika) damage that Hanumān ji inflicted on Lanka single-handedly must have been ginormous.

That damage softened up Lankā for subsequent campaign and conquest.

Lankini abandoning protection of Lankā was THE BIGGEST achievement of Hanumān ji in that surgical strike.

Burning of critical infrastructure was add-on. Must have severely affected mobility of rākshasa armies.

Not to mention the psychological damage to the morale of rākshasas.

One vānara does so much - what will army of them do. Remember they still considered mānava people inferior (rāma was a manushya). They will not see strength of a mānava until Shri Rāma brings down kumbhakarNa.
