Press play at 6pm, and let's head back to the halcyon days of 1991 when Bruce Dickinson could tour in Europe without any issues (the prick): mixcloud.com/soniccathedral…
We open with the late, great John Peel talking about @MBVofficial in 1991 and seeing them having three albums in the charts simultaneously in, ooh, about 30 years’ time…
...and then it's into ‘Honeypower’, which might be my favourite @MBVofficial song. I remember they opened their warm-up show at the @ICALondon back in 2008 with this and it sounded like a wounded elephant! 🐘
It wasn't just about ‘Honeypower’ in 1991, it was also about ‘Hips Tits Lips Power’ according to Silverfish!
Totally forgot this song came out on Creation Records. There were quite a few links between Camden Lurch and shoegaze, really, weren't there @steve_lamacq?!
@steve_lamacq A bit more lurching now, courtesy of Th’ Faith Healers:
The first appearance on the mix of Joe Dilworth – drummer and photographer extraordinaire. (We'll be celebrating some of his photos at a later date; watch this space.)
@thesociallondon Next up, @moonshake666, whose rare as hens’ teeth debut EP for Creation is a real must have. This is the ace ‘Coming’ which is presumably not about football returning home 🤔
@thesociallondon@moonshake666 So @moonshake666 were (I assume) named after a Can song; Holger Czukay was in Can and released a great solo album (‘Radio Wave Surfer’) in 1991, and this song is from it!
@thesociallondon Next up, Welfare Heroine, the band formed by the much-missed Dele Fadele who sadly passed away a few years ago. They didn't release much, but they did support @MBVofficial and this track is ace!
@thesociallondon I knew Dele from working at @NME; he was an incredible writer who really got the whole shoegaze thing; he came to the @slowdiveband reunion show at Hoxton Bar in 2014 and back in the day was immortalised on Chapterhouse’s song ‘Deli’...
@thesociallondon Speaking of Chapterhouse, here's the immense remix of ‘Mesmerise’:
@thesociallondon Next up, Chapterhouse’s Dedicated labelmates Cranes, with their classic single ‘Adoration’. Here's a lovely live version from Tyne Tees TV bitd:
@thesociallondon This is The Charlottes and ‘Prayer Song’ - and our prayers have been answered with that goal by @sterling7!
@thesociallondon The Charlottes had split up when their final album – the aptly titled ‘Things Come Apart’ – came out early in 1991. Their drummer @_SimonScott ended up joining...
@thesociallondon@_SimonScott@slowdiveband My late mum bought me the tape of this album from Volume Records in Sunderland when we went there to find a student house for me to live in 😢
Primal followed by @ScreamOfficial and ‘I’m Comin’ Down’ from ‘Screamadelica’, which I also bought on tape from Volume a few weeks later – as soon as I'd finished my first day at uni!
@ScreamOfficial Another Weatherall classic up next – the Sonic Shuffle mix of Finitribe’s ‘101’:
Perfectly timed for the final whistle this one!! COME ON!
Soul Family Sensation now with ‘Perfect Life’, it's the Orinoco Flow mix, so we have to follow with...
...Enya from her 91 album ‘Shepherd Moons’. I'd have laughed at you for playing this song back then (sorry @luketurneresq), but it's beautiful...
(This miserable section was for the self-reflective oh shit England have just lost bit)
Now on to the indie Enya, aka This Mortal Coil. This is from their third and final album ‘Blood’ and is a cover of Emmylou Harris’ ‘Til I Gain Control Again’...
It was sung by Heidi Berry, who also released her own album on @4AD_Official in 91, which featured this INCREDIBLE cover of Hüsker Dü’s ‘Up In The Air’:
@4AD_Official Terry Bickers of Levitation plays guitar on this, and he also guests on the following track (wrongly credited as Terry Bikers)...
It’s Les Nouvelles Polyphonies Corses and ‘Anima’, which also features John Hassell who sadly passed away the other day. It's a stunning album:
Keeping it French, with Etienne Daho. Might be cheating here as I think this @terrystuckshop remix came out in 92, but it's from his 91 album and England won, so who cares? It's ace but not on YouTube, so here's the original:
@terrystuckshop Had to be @bobpetesarah next really, didn't it? First it's their honorary shoegaze track ‘Like The Swallow’:
@bobpetesarah ...and then ‘Dilworth’s Theme’, which I presume is referencing our favourite drumming photographer again:
His future group @stereolabgroop follows with the lead track from their debut EP ‘Super 45’, which came out in May 1991:
Now it's @2020sonicboom and Spectrum, with the instrumental version of ‘(I Love You) To The Moon And Back’, which was given away on a 7” at gigs in 91:
And for the last song tonight, we're back where we started with @MBVofficial and ‘Moon Song’ from their classic ‘Tremolo‘ EP. Seemed to get an extra two mins on this C90 tape!
@MBVofficial What a lovely evening, might have a celebratory cider now. Thanks for listening and thanks for having me @thesociallondon...
Tonight! From 6pm! In the middle of the football! We'll be hosting the afterwork drinks for @thesociallondon!
Join us in the time machine back to 1991, with a selection of tunes to soundtrack the second half, the post-mortem and beyond! #partylikeits1991
And if you can't make it tonight, the next one is IRL... 👀
So excited to be celebrating our return to @thesociallondon (and the 30th anniversary of the Slough Festival) on Saturday, July 24 with guest DJs @Andybebop (@rideox4), Christian Savill (@slowdiveband) and @matflint (Revolver)!
Join us in the time machine back to 1991 for The Social Gathering (@thesociallondon) from 6pm tonight. There’s a bit of a Twin Peaks theme to today’s mix... 🪵
Join us for a drink and some tunes, including this one by The KLF, which is today’s Daily Devotional...
Also, you'll be excused for being late because you really should be watching @cheval_sombre’s live set for @RoughTrade over on their Instagram, which is also at 6pm!
30 years ago today, the word “shoe-gazers” appeared for the very first time in print...
It crept into a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it down-page news article in the Sampled Notes column in the May 25 issue of @NME which had some info about the forthcoming ‘Holding Our Breath’ EP and live dates by @slowdiveofficial...
In it, they were described as “hotly-tipped shoe-gazers” (with a hyphen, natch)...
All aboard! Here's tonight's mix for The Social Gathering (@thesociallondon). Press play at 6 and follow this thread for a good old wallow in nostalgia. Off we go back to the heady days of 1991... mixcloud.com/soniccathedral…
@thesociallondon We open with the sound of the @worldoftwistuk and the extended remix of ‘Sons Of The Stage’, what an incredible band/song. Here they are performing the single version on Eggs N Baker:
@thesociallondon@worldoftwistuk The football commentary was from the @SunderlandAFC v Newcastle derby match on November 17, 1991. Peter Davenport put Sunderland one up, but the game ended as a 1-1 draw (we'll ignore that)...
