I felt like I gave the KMT so many chances because I wanted Taiwan to be a healthy democracy with two functional parties. But I really don't know how I can keep doing that unless they kick Hung Hsiu-chu and Lien Chan out of the party NOW!
Translation in the thread 🧵
Former KMT Chairman Lien Chan said in his congratulatory message that it has been 100 years since the founding of the CCP and 72 years since it has led the development of the sacred country on the mainland. The rejuvenation of the Chinese people have reached the peak of 5000 yrs.
He hoped for the peaceful development cross-straits so a “all the sons and daughters of Greater China will cooperate to take the development of our tribe to new heights.”
Meanwhile, another former KMT Chairwoman Hung Hsiu-chu said “The greatness of the Chinese nation-tribe is a historical inevitability and hope that the two sides of the straits will promote unity and a meeting of hearts and spirits.“ 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮
“Do our utmost best to complete the great mission of national unification. Build a nation that is rich and strong, a tribe that is revived, a Chinese dream where the people are fortunate and content.” <== THIS IS NOT OK FOR POLITICIANS IN TW’S OPPOSITION PARTY TO SAY TO THE CCP
Original link. Somebody please tell me it’s fake news or they were taken out of context or the KMT has gotten rid of them or SOMETHING. ANYTHING. (HT @samsonellis)
OK James Soong of the People’s First Party is pretty much a nobody now...but wow... translating for lickspittle perfection:
“中國共產黨艱苦卓絕,奮鬥不懈,重振華夏,以人民福祉為先,人類命運共同體為念,深令世人刮目相看。至盼未來雙方致力促進兩岸和平發展,實現中華民族復興”
”The Chinese Communist Party faced the depth of hardship and never gave up the struggle to restore the greatness of China. Always putting the prosperity of the people first, and never forgetting the common fate of humanity. Truly deeply earned the respectful gaze of the world.”
“Let’s hope for both sides to do our utmost to promote the peaceful development cross-straits, and realize the restoration of the great Chinese people.“
WOW!

Yesterday I had a call with @ParisOrtizWines from @StandUp4Nuclear. Immediately, I knew she was a kindred spirit. We both came to love nuclear because we first love the planet and human flourishing. I told her I’d love to do a #StandUp4Nuclear event in Taiwan, but...(thread)
@ParisOrtizWines@StandUp4Nuclear No “buts!” Paris shared how @StandUp4Nuclear held exciting online events all over the globe last year. “You have to give people a reason to pay attention. Make it funny and exciting.” I was inspired! I told Paris with the referendum for the 4th nuclear plant coming up in August..
...the timing couldn’t be better. I also shared with her that we need a non-partisan online space for Taiwanese nuclear supporters. Can we make a Chinese-language version of Stand Up for Nuclear’s FB happen? A Line group? Even a video from nuclear supporters all over the world?
My roomie is helping redo my Godgrandmother's apartment. In the process I feel like I got to know this woman I never know from a bygone era. She appeared to have had a true love match, swapping playful poetry with her husband and also did stuff like write ty notes for squid:
She would almost certainly have described herself as Chinese and in fact when she got cancer, she found a way to go back home to China to pass, leaving behind only these crumbling letters in exquisite handwriting.
I vaguely feel the need to digitize them before they completely turn to dust. And while I only met my Godgrandmother once I do feel spurred to improve my godawful handwriting, maybe based on hers'
I had a great call with .@Scholars_Stage about all things Taiwan...defense, politics and of course energy. My biggest questions to Tanner were regarding whether China plans to attack, say in the 10 yr window. Short answer, who knows. Long answer, keep reading...🧵
The problem is the US military didn't really didn't oriented itself towards China as its actual biggest threat until three years ago, having spent the last 20 years or so futzing around the middle east.
We are now on-trajectory to do thing like rebuild our submarine fleet...but these things take time. Rollings out a new generation of bombers take time. Meanwhile, the Chinese has been full steam ahead on figuring out how to deny US access to the South China Sea.
OK Guys...you know I’m taking this MOOC for Nuclear Energy. I’m speedrunnning module 1.1 this afternoon. I’ve done the work throughout the week but took no notes because I was too busy with reporting etc. Doing this so I don’t forget everything. learning.edx.org/course/course-…
1.1.1: ”Ionizing” is just anything that can knock an electron from an atom. Can be electron, proton, neutron, larger fragments. Light? Yes, but must carry at least 3-4electron volts. UV, X-rays, Gamma rays are ionizing. Don’t be afraid of your microwaves and cellphones.
Geiger counter: A thing that picks up ionizing radiation
Background spectrum: naturally existing radiation. Could be cosmic radiation. Could be coming from the walls, from the ground, from yoself.
Oh how the tides of politics turn. To tell the truth, I had kind of forgotten about the opposition KMT as they were so downtrodden. But given recent events, I decided it was time to have a chat with Ho Chih-Yung, their deputy director of international affairs. 🧵
TBH, the KMT has been brutally marginalized for being relatively pro-China. Especially amongst the young. As Ho himself joked, “I used to say of course there are KMT supporters aged 40 and below...me! But then I turned 41.”
BUT two blackouts in a week AND a COVID crisis?
I didn’t ask Ho about COVID. That didn’t happen on KMT’s watch. But I asked him how KMT’s policy on power differed from the DPP’s. “Taiwan is simply not ready to move away from Nuclear Energy,” was his short answer. In President Ma’s 1-2-3-4 formulation, Nuclear would be 20%
Another reason why the govt’s ”perfect storm” or “blame it on bob” excuses for recent blackouts is almost insultingly thin is...people predicted this. In fact, the 2014 Minister of Economic Affairs Woody Duh said “In 2021, Taiwan will face power crisis.”🧵 news.ltn.com.tw/amp/news/polit…
This was when Longmen, Taiwan‘s 4th nuclear plant, was about to be mothballed. Newly appointed Minister Duh predicted if N4 is mothballed/coal plants go offline, Taiwan will only have reserve capacity of 5.4 percent by 2021 and “will absolutely go short on power”
Now let’s remember, this man, who is now being raised up as a prophet, was being absolutely trashed by by anti-nuclear environmentalists as a fearmonger and a liar. No. Former minister Duh is neither a liar or a prophet...he was just a man who could do maths.
