1/ A recent React study estimated that up to 2 million adults may have had symptoms of Covid for more than 12 weeks, the current criteria for Long Covid.
Ongoing support for Long Covid patients from Johnson’s Govt
unfortunately may lack financial aid such as access to benefits.
2/Matt Hancock, the health secretary at the time of the React report’s release, said:
“Long Covid can have a lasting & debilitating impact on the lives of those affected…. Cont
3/ Matt Hancock, health secretary at the time of the React report’s release…
“….Studies like this help us to rapidly build our understanding of the impact of the condition & we’re using these findings & other new research to develop support & treatments.”
4/For some with Long Covid the symptoms may not be very serious, in others breathlessness & fatigue can be extremely debilitating
Unfortunately, it isn’t clear at this time to what degree Govt support includes payment of benefits
As always, there’s a good chance it’s about cost
5/ Unfortunately, for those with Long Covid, the DWP has complicated matters by refusing FOI requests for Long-Covid guidance issued to PIP & WCA assessors on the grounds that it would “prejudice the effective conduct of public affairs” & may not be in the public interest.
6/ In May the DWP had issued guidance to DLA decision makers on how to deal with awards for Long Covid in children, but that no similar guidance had been published on assessing Long Covid for awards of PIP, ESA or UC.
7/ FOI requests were made to the DWP for the guidance - however, the DWP refused to meet the statutory time-limit for a response, instead giving themselves an extra month before they reply.
8/The DWP’s excuse for refusing to meet the statutory time-limit for a FOI response is
“that the request is, in their view, covered by a specific exemption: Section 36. Prejudice to effective conduct of public affairs”
The DWP say they will now respond to our request by 22 July
9/ The DWP say it has “not yet reached a decision on the balance of the public interest. Due to the need to consider, in all the circumstances of the case, where the balance of the public interest lies in relation to the information that you have requested…
10/ …. the Department will not be able to respond to your request in full within 20 working days”
The DWP say they will now respond to our request by 22 July….
11/ It’s odd why the DWP was happy to publish guidance on this subject in relation to children, only a tiny proportion of whom have so far been affected, but withhold it for adults
@benefitsandwork will keep readers informed as and when they get any further response from the DWP
2/ As the DWP drags its feet over reform of the terminal illness rules for benefits, it has been revealed that more than 100 people a month are dying whilst still fighting for an award of PIP in spite of having less than six months to live….
3/ A report by the Motor Neurone Disease Association and Marie Curie found that in the 18 months between April 2018 and October 2019 1,860 people died within six months of being refused benefits.
1/ As Hong Kong slides ever deeper into authoritarianism, with the media, courts and arts scene being censored and repressed, more young people make the difficult choice to flee the city…
2/ We must ensure their safety, to preserve and protect the spirit and people of Hong Kong
Exodus of young people from Hong Kong.
Under the crushing fear of the draconian security law, young people are reluctantly leaving Hong Kong in droves to find safety & freedom elsewhere.
3/ STAND WITH HONG KONG 🇭🇰
In particular, activists and anyone associated with the pro-democracy movement in the city simply do not feel safe anymore in their home city.
@GoodLawProject More shocking PPE contract revelations: 28 May 2021
1/ Government gets a bona fide PPE offer from a would be supplier. The company has sourced the PPE, submitted a bid and passed through the technical checks….
2/ They’re close to signing on the dotted line. But at the eleventh hour they get dropped. Instead, Government buys the same thing from someone else. Someone who came in later but with close connections to Cabinet Ministers - and at an eye watering price….
3/ This is a story we have heard, with close variants, again and again. But Government secrecy means we haven’t been able to corroborate it - until now.
1/ The DWP is facing at least 3 court actions relating to the deaths of benefits claimants at the same time as the BBC has revealed that the department has carried out 150 internal reviews into the death or serious harm to claimants
2/ Philippa Day’s family are suing the DWP & Capita for breaches of her human rights & the harm both Philippa & her family suffered as the result of the way her PIP claim was dealt with.
3/ Philippa took her own life after her DLA was wrongly stopped & she was required to attend a PIP face-to-face assessment, in spite of experiencing mental health issues including emotionally unstable personality disorder, anxiety, depression & agoraphobia benefitsandwork.co.uk/news/4332-fina…
1/ How’s that levelling up going up North @BorisJohnson ?
Not well at all.
Johnson’s Govt stalling on Northern Powerhouse Rail (what’s that be Ed?)
& funding cuts have angered Northern leaders.
.
The Leeds-Manchester electrification, promised by 2018, still remains in limbo...
2/ Further blows to the Northern Powerhouse include @BorisJohnson Tory Government preparing train service cuts to avoid building Manchester Piccadilly’s extra &800 million platform, also promised by 2018...
3/ And with Northern Transport’s budget halved (less £105 million) @BorisJohnson Tory Govt has scuppered a planned Manchester region wide electronic ticketing system (like London’s oyster) despite pledging in 2011, that such would be a available by 2014 manchestereveningnews.co.uk/news/greater-m…
