1/ What should you do if you got one shot of J&J COVID vaccine with the Delta variant spreading?
2/ The Delta variant is spreading in the U.S. as it did in the UK, as did the Alpha variant before it. The Delta variant is more infectious than other variants and can evade the immune response to older variants.
3/ The Pfizer, Moderna, and J&J vaccines remain effective in preventing severe disease and death from the Delta variant, but we see a significant drop in overall vaccine effectiveness with the J&J vaccine versus the Delta variant.
4a/ So for elderly persons, those at increased risk of severe disease and death (e.g. people with diabetes or cardiovascular disease), or immunosuppressed persons who may not have as strong a response to vaccination, …
4b/ many of us including myself would recommend getting a second vaccination with one of the mRNA vaccines after first dose of J&J vaccine.
5/ I would not recommend getting a 2nd dose of J&J vaccine without more data.

And If you are NOT in one of these high risk groups, I would recommend waiting until we would have more data.

1/ Here's why it's important to get that 2nd dose of COVID vaccine:

B.1.1.7 UK variant
- 1 dose of Pfizer 49% effective vs symptomatic COVID
- 2 doses 93% effective

B.1617.2 India variant
- 1 dose of Pfizer 33% effective vs symptomatic COVID
- 2 doses 88% effective
3/ This is why the UK has reduced the interval between 1st and 2nd doses from 12 weeks to 8 weeks for persons over 50 and others at high-risk for severe disease:
