My heart breaks for Sha'Carrie, and it was a human mistake, especially all things considered. Olympic level competition unfortunately requires setting aside all kinds of shit we mere mortals do. If the IOC had let her compete they'd have been setting a precedent they can't uphold

The International Olympic Committee is trash on plenty of levels, but this was pretty cut and dry. Weed's not performance enhancing, but it masks other drugs and minimizes muscle and body pain. It's a tough ass lesson to learn, though.

I'm looking at Sha'Carrie's coach and the training team around her, because she should have been prepared, while training for trials, to shift her mindset. And to KNOW they were gonna test her every chance they got. To me, it's a failure on *their* part

Phelps tested positive months after the Olympics, was suspended by USA swimming for 3 months (and I think stopped getting paid), and lost his Kellogg's endorsement. If we gonna compare, let's at least compare with the right info.

After already being banned from the 2018 Olympics, and they aren't allowed to compete under the Russian flag which means the Russia doesn't get credit for any medals the team takes or records they set.

The IOC banned list has 9 categories. Marijuana falls under "narcotics and cannabinoids" along with oxy, morphine, methadone and fentanyl.

Posting the full banned list bc there's some assumption, bc the word "doping" is always used, that most of the drug bans are just steroid and performance enhancement. The WADA (World Anti-Doping Association) list is a bitch.

Because when the Canadian Olympic Association lawyers looked at the rules that year, marijuana was a *restricted* substance on the list given to athletes to sign, not *banned*. The current WADA list has been in place since 1999.

Ross Rebagliati* tested positive for 17.8 nanograms/ml of THC in 98. The positive threshold was 15ng/ml. WADA had since raised it to 150ng/ml. His positive was from repeated contact before the games. Now he advocates for removing cannabis from the banned list.

Sha'Carri's handling this with more grace than a lot of people at her age, pulled between two life-changing moments, under a global lens and scrutiny, would be able to.
I was also happy to see she still had that swoosh on. I hope that means they have her back.
